Nanoleaf's latest light panels may not have the most captivating name, Shapes (more like hexagons), but the name means a major step for the company - a step towards unification. The shapes are the first in the line to incorporate a new connector that allows interoperability between today's Hexagons and tomorrow's circles or rectangles, finally putting the commitment to a single style.

In recent weeks I have been testing the newest shapes in my house and I liked to see not only the magical light scenes, but also the refinements they offer compared to the previous panels. While Hexagons are not exactly my favorite shape, they are my favorite features and are the ones I recommend to anyone who wants to start with the lights of the future.

Six wonderful sides

The latest hexagon shapes feature a mostly white plastic construction that stretches 9 inches wide and just over 7.5 inches high. The lights have a small rear window in each corner, which gives the shapes a slightly round look when lit and look darker when turned off. Each light panel is capable of displaying up to 16 million different colors and shades of white, with color temperatures between 1,200K and 6500K. The panels have a maximum brightness of 100 lumens that consume only two watts of power each and are equal for up to 25,000 hours of use.

At the back of each panel is a new removable snap-on mount, which is where the included double-sided tape is attached for wall mounting. The new design allows the panel to be removed from the bracket for minor adjustments or sliding into an extension connector and does so without removing the tape. The panels can be permanently mounted on the wall, if desired, but Nanoleaf does not include the necessary hardware in the box.

As with previous Nanoleaf light panels, Hexagon Shapes is connected to other panels via a small piece of connector, although this time it is made of a rigid plastic that attaches. Although the new connector is only used for Hexagons at the moment, Nanoleaf claims that it allows interoperability with future forms, making the latest panels the first truly modular lighting system in the line. The new connector is also how the included power supply and controller attach to the light panels, which work with all available slots on the lights. Up to 500 hexagons can be added to the controller, although the standard power supply can only power 21 hexagons, and each part of the hexagons has a compatible slot.

The control unit follows the flat edges of the Hexagons, giving it a more perfect look compared to the Nanoleaf Aurora triangles. The controller has a total of six buttons: one for switching and starting, two dedicated to brightness adjustments and three for going on stage. Shapes panels also include touch capabilities, with each light having the ability to recognize swipes, taps and long presses.

Smart applications and voice controls are enabled via 2.4gHz Wi-Fi, which doesn't require a separate dedicated hub. The panels work with the Nanoleaf Smarter Series app, which provides access to downloadable scenes on both iOS and Android and allows connections to various platforms such as HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant and Razer Synapse, just to name a few. Hexagons also work with Nanoleaf's hardware, which offers a total of 12 controls and can adjust brightness levels by rotating.

Compared to Aurora and Canvas Nanoleaf, installing Hexagons was a much faster and easier experience. I really like the way the Hexagons come with the wall mount already attached and the way the linkers give a satisfying click when I put them in place. The best part of the revamped design, however, is how the panel can be separated from the stand without the need to remove the tape, which makes it easy to add additional panels.

Turning to the lights themselves, the colors of the Hexagons are bright and vibrant, filling a dark room with almost every combination or shade you can think of. The Nanoleaf application offers an amazing amount of customization and scenes, each bringing the life of the panels through fades, impulses and, of course, solid colors. I especially like the scenes that have a "breathing" effect, which seems so pleasant in the background in all the rooms in my house.

Another favorite feature of mine is that Hexagons can be controlled directly on the device, in more ways than one. The physical controller, although small, is a universal way for everyone to check everything the Hexagons have to offer, which is great for kids. The panels themselves also react to touch and gestures, so you can swipe up and down to adjust the brightness or you can quickly tap for a ripple-like effect with certain scenes.

Speaking of touch, Hexagon panels, like the Canvas line, can be used as buttons for launching scenes through the Nanoleaf app and Apple's HomeKit. Now, when I say panels, I mean that each individual panel can be assigned unique touch actions. So, in my case, I immediately received 10 buttons to use in the Home application. Each panel also supports several tap actions: single tap, double tap and long tap, which allows a crazy amount of possibilities.

Despite the fact that the Hexagons are very close to full edge lighting, there is still a small piece of plastic on each corner, which gives the lights a rounded look when lit. The look isn't bad in any way, but I'd definitely prefer straighter edges, as the rounded corners look a little less clean compared to the company's Aurora triangles.

Rounded corners are also more evident in the fact that the Hexagons have uneven lighting on each panel. Depending on the colors displayed, the Hexagons suffer from light spots that are darker or lighter in each corner, and the unevenness actually creates a whirlwind. With three different shapes under the belt, I expected Nanoleaf to refine its designs so far to eliminate the need for a bezel and definitely reduce uneven stains, but it looks like we're not quite there yet.

W-Fi connectivity, although fast and responsive in most cases, was not perfect enough, as I experienced a single "No Answer" game in both the Apple Home and Nanoleaf applications during my testing. This problem happened apparently at random, appearing after days of working well and without changes in the house. The only solution in this case was to disconnect the panels for a few seconds, then connect them back, nothing important, but it was a little inconvenient.

Fill in the list of complaints is the lack of permanent mounting hardware in the box. Sure, the two-sided mounting tape can lift the panels up and down the wall quickly and without tools, but as we all know, these types of strips can and will fail at some point. When the tape hits, expect to see damage to the wall and possibly the panel itself, which is certainly not something you want to see with a product that comes at a relatively premium price.

Smart plugs are everywhere these days, with every company connected under the sun having their own convenient controllers. The fairly simple nature of smart plugs, although it does not offer too many ways to differentiate products, which leads to choosing what is cheaper and supports the smart platform at home.

The lack of differences is especially evident in the HomeKit world, where fans have only a handful of options that are outside the mold with a single outlet. One of the latest plug-ins to enter the market, however, Meril Smart Wi-Fi Dual Plug aims to consolidate the category, offering a slightly larger plug that offers two outlets in one.

I tested the new plug in the last few weeks and found that it offers almost everything you could want in a smart outlet. Affordable pricing, responsive controls, easy pairing and support for HomeKit, Alexa and Google Assistant, it has it all. In addition, it comes with the added bonus of having the additional outlet independently controlled.

At first glance, the Smart Meross Dual Wi-Fi plug looks similar to most smart plugs on the market, except for the slightly wider design and the presence of a second socket. The plug has a white plastic body, with a slight entrance lip that unfolds around the face to give it a slightly more visual flame. The plug measures about 4.5 inches at its widest point and is only 1.6 inches high, which allows it to operate without locking the second container in the standard North American electrical outlet.

Around the right side of the plug is a physical button that acts as a way to switch the power of both outlets with a simple push. The button is also used to perform a factory reset, which is engaged by pressing and holding for a few seconds. The output has a single LED indicator light on the front, which glows solid green when an outlet is turned on and flashes in pairing mode. Apart from the button, the light and the sockets themselves, the only landmark of the hardware is the HomeKit configuration code, which is attached to the top of the plug.

The dual plug accepts a maximum of 10 amps and has no weather resistance, as it is intended for indoor use only. For smart functions, the plug communicates to home networks via 2.4 ghz Wi-Fi without a dedicated hub and can be associated directly from the box with the Apple Home application on iOS. When paired in this way, a separate application download or account registration is not required; however, for Android users, both are required to get it up and running.

Once connected, both jacks of the device are available for remote controls through various applications or voice controls. The output points can be controlled independently, which means that you can switch one off while the other remains on, although this can only be done via the remote controls, not the physical button. With HomeKit, each socket is available for use in scenes and automation, and through the Meross app, you can set timers and programs, but scenes are limited to Meross devices only.

As with other HomeKit accessories, setting up the Meross Smart Wi-Fi Dual Plug is quick, easy and hassle-free. The plug-in can be associated directly with HomeKit via the Home application, without the need to download the Meross application or register an account. In combination with the simple plug and play nature of the product category, it only takes a minute or two to start switching and disabling remotely connected devices.

Turning to the design, I like that the dual plug is so thin that it doesn't block the other socket on the wall. While you certainly can’t use a bulky plug above or below the outlet, it works with typical heads, which can be crucial if the space is excellent. Of course, with the slim design, I just had to try to connect two of the dual sockets in the same container and I'm happy to report that they really fit well.

Speaking of space, another thing I like about the dual jack is that it offers a lot of space between the two sockets on the device. During testing, I tried to connect a larger combination of bricks and power plugs and found that the dual plug was able to accommodate almost anything I could throw at it, only the largest blocks used for things like cable modems causing a problem. Finally, despite the spacious camera and slim design, the double stopper is not as wide as you would expect, which prevents it from sticking too much to the wall.

The performance of the plug-in was about as good, with fast response times and a stable and reliable connection to the HomeKit. Switching a socket in the Home or Siri app changed the device in a second, with most cases feeling like it happened instantly. The dual plug did not offer me any situation in which it does not respond through the Home application and I did not see any case in which the plug took a little more than a second or two to update its status.

Even though the sockets on the double plug can be controlled individually remotely, there is only one device with a physical button. When pressed, the button activates both sockets at the same time, which is not the biggest offer, as I don't expect to use the controls on the device often, but the separate buttons are a bit of a strange omission. .

Another minor complaint I have is that Meross Smart Wi-Fi Dual Plug does not support power monitoring. I assume this is due to the desire to keep costs low, which is a perfect compromise, but being able to check the amount of energy a device uses can be quite useful. It is something that only adds general value.

My final issue is that the Meross app and an account are required to perform firmware updates, as with other Meross products I've tested. I would definitely like Meross to implement a way to request access to HomeKit data, which would automatically bring the company's accessories into the app without the registration process to keep things simple.

Another minor complaint I have is that the restart button, located just below, has the potential to be hit inadvertently. This has not happened so far in my house, but in my previous experiences with smart switches using a similar configuration, it will eventually come into play.

Despite being one of the cheapest options for a HomeKit-enabled light switch, the Meross smart Wi-Fi wall switch excels at all the basics. Fast lightning response time, solid reliability and easy installation are just about anything you could ask for in a smart switch.

Combine all this with the lack of the required app or account and you will get a clear winner. If you have the necessary wiring in the wall boxes, you do not need darkening and you do not need a smart switch for a complicated three-way installation, then this switch from Meross should definitely be on your radar.

In addition to the recent HomeKit-based smart camera bar, the introduction of the ONVIS C3 indoor smart camera may not have gone through all the headlines, but its imminent launch is still significant for the platform. C3 is the first appearance of a HomeKit Secure Video camcorder that can be paired right out of the box via the Home app, with a price that is under $ 100.

Now, there are definitely cheaper HomeKit cameras, but you have to go through a few circles to get the same functionality. Whether you download a third-party app and sign up for another account, or apply a firmware update, these are all potential barriers for those looking for just an Apple-like experience with their smart home accessories.

I installed an ONVIS C3 camera a few weeks ago in my house and although I think the design and night vision are not the best around, they have a lot to enjoy, including the setup process mentioned above. Great views in well-lit rooms, fast response times to live viewing, local storage and solid reliability, certainly show that the look can be misleading.

The ONVIS C3 features a classic interior camera design, with a large portion of the lens at the top connected to a wide base by a thin bracket. The glossy plastic frame is primarily white, only the front of the lens area has a contrasting black pattern. Next to the lens, there is a single LED indicator that is used for display when active or for recording.

On the left side of the C3 is a single button used to reset the camera and a micro-SD card slot that can store video locally on cards up to 128 GB in size. At the top of the camera is a significant portion dedicated to the built-in speaker, which, combined with an on-board microphone, allows two-way audio. At the back of the C3 is a single USB-C port that is used for power, and a cable, along with wall mounting hardware, is included in the box.

The C3 records and streams 1080p high definition video at 30 fps, with a 134 degree field of view. The camera also supports HDR and standards such as black and white night vision, but includes several unique features, such as four-second pre-recording and up to four streams. Two of these streams are reserved for simultaneous viewing with the others dedicated to local and cloud storage through HomeKit Secure Video.

The smart features are enabled via dual-band Wi-Fi that connects it directly to the HomeKit and the ONVIS Home app without a dedicated hub. Although an ONVIS-specific hub is not required, HomeKit camera support generally requires a permanent resident device, such as an Apple TV or HomePod, to be in the home. The camera supports HomeKit Secure Video right out of the box, giving you instant access to 10 days of rolling cloud storage with a paid iCloud plan. You'll also get smart notifications that can filter out unpleasant notifications, such as vehicles or animals.

C3's basic HomeKit features include built-in motion sensor automation, home sharing, and live viewing support on iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS. HomeKit Secure Video support also means that the C3 will be compatible with future iOS 14 features, such as Face Recognition and task areas.

Setting up your ONVIS C3 camera was one of the fastest, as it can be up and running in minutes without a separate download or account application to sign up for. Simply scanning HomeKit code through the Home app is all that is needed, which not only makes things consistent for HomeKit fans, but is great for those with privacy issues, especially with an indoor camera.

In terms of hardware, I like how the C3 uses a USB-C connection for power and how it includes a cable right in the box. Of course, the inclusion of USB-C does not affect performance in any way, shape or form. However, it's definitely a nice touch, one that other recent HomeKit cameras have cost around twice as much as they have left. The same goes for the micro SD card slot for local storage, which is nice for backup purposes.

Simply scanning HomeKit code through the Home app is all that is needed, which not only makes things consistent for HomeKit fans, but is great for those with privacy issues, especially with an indoor camera.

When it comes to image quality, the ONVIS C3 does an excellent job with detail and general clarity in well-lit areas. I can't say that the camera meets its requirements to provide a true HDR image, but for the price, the image is fantastic and will work well for keeping tabs inside the house. The camera worked well with movement, with minimal pixelation, stuttering or strokes seen.

Extracting a live image from the Home app was just as impressive, with the feed only taking a second or two to start after reaching the camera thumbnail. With HomeKit Secure Video support, motion event notifications arrived quickly, and recorded videos were available for viewing in known history. Finally, I like how the ONVIS Home app gives you access to settings such as sensitivity, image rotation, and field of view, which are particularly lacking in other HomeKit Secure video cameras on the market.

Let's not beat around the bush here; ONVIS C3 is not the most beautiful HomeKit option around. The overall design of the room rises to the early days of smart security cameras, with a voluminous plastic design that makes it stand out in any decor. The dated design, plus the lack of hustle and bustle of the camera, makes the whole package feel incredibly cheap, which is a headache when built exclusively for the Apple ecosystem.

The same lack of polish extends to the Home ONVIS app, which is definitely an app I never intend to use outside of firmware updates. The app doesn't have details like visual feedback when you tap and hold a device tile, which is the only way to access accessory-specific options. The app also suffers from a few translation issues and occasional visual issues, which makes the overall experience less than ideal.

Switching to the hardware itself, while the ONVIS C3 produces a good image in well-lit areas, the night vision of the camera is not as pleasant. Captured images and watching a live feed in the dark look hurried or noisy to them, something I've never seen with a HomeKit camera before C3. Now, most cameras generally look pixelated for a few moments on initial loading, but the C3 image is not the same because the grains are smaller and do not disappear.

The night vision reminds me of an old school CCTV TV camera or a TV with analog antenna reception and it's not something I expected to see on the Apple platform. Unfortunately, the bright image goes beyond what could be a decent view, because things actually look good at night, when things line up in certain places for a second or two.

HomeKit cameras seem to be scary these days, with new options announced or hitting store shelves at a faster rate lately. Although most of these cameras only support HomeKit, in addition to their own cloud services and applications, we are now at a point where we see options that have been created specifically for HomeKit. HomeKit cameras offer an unmatched level of privacy, offering properties and working without a camera-specific app or even registering for an account, which is exactly how the category should be managed.

It would not be a surprise, at least for HomeKit fans, that the latest version of the built-in camera for HomeKit comes from Eve, who has been right there with Apple since the early days of the platform. Eve Cam, which I've been testing in my house for the past two weeks, offers an easy-to-use, consistent experience and does so with a focus on privacy. This gives me peace of mind that very few indoor rooms can offer.

Built-to-HomeKit

Eve Cam: features

Eve Cam features an elegant, all-black frame made of a blend of matte and glossy plastic. The Eve Cam frame follows a more traditional security camera design, with a thin support that rests between a flat base and a circular lens portion at the top. The camera holder can pivot vertically, allowing the camera to look straight up or down, and it can also rotate horizontally 360 degrees. Despite its ability to rotate, the camera is not motorized and all adjustments are made by physically rotating the device. The stand, although thin, provides enough tension to keep the room fixed in the desired position, when used on a flat surface or when mounted on a wall or ceiling.

There are no buttons to be found anywhere on Eve Cam, not even a switching alternative. Instead of the button, Eve Cam starts immediately after it has been connected using the supplied micro-USB cable. The power port is located on the bottom of the circular lens portion and, because it uses USB, works with a wide variety of sockets and charging bricks. Of course, Eve also includes a wall adapter in the box, which is actually a beautiful modular brick that works with different forms of output around the world.

At the back of the Eve Cam, there are a number of small holes for the camera's built-in speaker, which is used with two-way audio, and at the bottom is a mounting device that holds the camera in place. The base of the camera is magnetic, allowing it to stick to a wide variety of surfaces, and the hardware for permanent wall mounting is included. When used, the camera displays its status with a single LED indicator positioned just above the lens. A blue light indicates that it is powered on and off, while a red light lets those in the room know that a live view is being transmitted or recorded.

Eve Cam captures 1080p high definition video at 24fps, with a field of view of 150 degrees. As you would expect, the camera has night vision capabilities that can produce black and white images up to 16 meters away. An on-board infrared motion sensor triggers the camera to notify users of the activity and start recording. Eve Cam records all events directly on iCloud, as there are no storage or expansion slots on board. The camera connects to home networks via Wi-Fi and can be set up without a separate app or account, making it one of the fastest to use with the Home app only.

Once paired with HomeKit, the camera can use all the standard features offered by Apple's smart home platform, such as automation and activity notifications, as well as cloud storage via HomeKit Secure Video. Cloud storage requires a paid subscription to an iCloud storage plan, but videos stored through HomeKit don't count toward any data limit. A 10-day run of recorded events is available through a timeline that is displayed while watching a camera, and videos can be saved and shared for more permanent storage.

All HomeKit Secure Video features require a HomeKit hub, such as Apple TV or HomePod, which are used for local image processing, notifications, and remote viewing. Because Eve Cam was designed with HomeKit in mind, the setup process was extremely quick and easy. I like that once it's been disconnected and connected, all it takes to get it up and running is a scan of the HomeKit association code through the iOS Home app. I really like that this camera can be used without the need to download a specialized application or create an account through a registration process. Being someone who focuses on privacy, not having an account that could be related to activities in front of the camera is a huge plus, especially for something for the interior.

Moving on to the hardware, despite being a stationary camera, I really like how flexible Eve Cam is. The pivoting and rotation design of the stand allows you to adjust the minutes which can only capture the correct viewing, which is often a problem for non-motorized cameras. I also really like how the base of the stand is magnetized, which opens it up to some truly unique placements and how Eve offers a grip on the bottom to hold it in place on flat surfaces.

Eve Cam is the first camera I used, which managed to keep up constantly with someone walking or running, without any dizziness or pause seen in live viewings or recordings.

When it comes to visual images, Eve Cam's HD Cam 1080p HD resolution presents a clear and detailed view in daylight conditions. I found that the colors are a bit on the off side, but even so, the quality of Eve Cam was close to the top of the list for the HomeKit cameras I tested. If the camera really excelled, it was moving in front of his sight. Eve Cam is the first camera I used, which managed to keep up constantly with someone walking or running without any dizziness or pause seen in live viewings or recordings, which it really was. impressive. It wasn't exactly the case 100% of the time, and the network conditions will play a role, but it was almost perfect.

Accessing Eve Cam through the Home app was just as impressive, as I still haven't had any feedback issues. Uploading the live view isn't the fastest I've experienced, but it worked every few seconds. Reliability extends to motion events, with the camera sending a notification within a second or two of activity, and the recordings were available on iCloud only moments later. Finally, Eve Cam's two-way audio performance was adequate for long-distance conversations, about a second off before the sound was transmitted through the camera's speaker.

Eve Cam: What I do not like

Along with a premium price and Eve's history of launching HomeKit accessories that have "high-end" finishes, Eve Cam's overall design is a disappointment. The plastic frame of the room has a cheaper feel, which means it is lighter than I had anticipated. Also, I didn't expect to see micro-USB used for power at a higher price and I would definitely like to have seen USB-C instead.

My conclusion is that Eve Cam has no weather resistance and any form of local storage. Local storage, such as a micro-SD card slot on board, would certainly have been nice to have as a backup to store events in the event of an internet outage, and weather resistance would open the camera up to a potential for placement around the house.

While the Eve Cam view is great during the day, I found that night vision was a different experience. Viewing a live stream from the camera in the dark produced an image that suffered from some pixelation issues, making the finer details harder to see. The image at night is certainly not bad, and it will do the job for most scenarios, it just isn't as good as other HomeKit cameras.

My final complaint is that, although it is reliable, the camera suffers from attacks in which the live experience of a few will last upwards of 10 seconds. These cases are few and far between, but when they hit, it's a little annoying. I'm not at all sure if it's a HomeKit issue or a camera-specific issue, but I haven't seen this behavior with other HomeKit Secure Video wired cameras, such as the Logitech Circle View.

Design, price and night vision aside, the first Eve room still has a lot to offer. Excellent 1080p images, able to keep up with all the action ahead, fantastic reliability and truly flexible support make it one of the best HomeKit cameras available today.

The best thing about Eve Cam, though, is that it works with HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video right out of the box. There is no need to update the firmware through a third-party application that activates HomeKit and no account registration (which could link your camera view to you) - it just works. So, while it may not be the brightest room around, it is one of the safest and most private, which makes it worth the price of admission to my book.

I spent last month with such a massage, the Sportneer percussion massage weapon and I came up with a new appreciation for this category. Now, I'm certainly not an athletic person and I don't suffer from recurring pain, so I'm certainly not the target market here, but I can still say that this powerful massage gun is one you can actually feel. In fact, this massage is more than powerful - it is incredibly powerful, which may or may not be a good thing.

Installing an attachment does not require tools, as you simply push them into the barrel portion. A small rubber gasket helps keep the attachment in place, as there are no pins or bolts attached, and the Sportneer includes a bag of extra items in case it needs to be replaced.

Turning to attachments, I like how Sportneer has included a wide variety of different shapes and materials. Before trying the massager for the first time I suspected that a softer, circular attachment would be the best of the bunch, and sure enough, after I gave them all a whirl, it was really the best for me. . In fact, I liked this material so much that I would like all the other attachments to be made the same, because a flat version seems to be a match made in heaven.

Despite the "mini" moniker on the box and easily thrown into marketing for the Sportneer Massage Gun, I wouldn't describe it as one of those things. This does not mean that the massage gun is too bulky or heavy, it is simply not exactly something I would personally travel with.

The included carrying case makes the portability a bit better, but I still see it as more of a stay at home accessory. In use, I found that the weight of the massage makes long blows a little uncomfortable on the wrist, but it was not unbearable.

During operation, as much as I like how easy it is to change and remove attachments, I have seen a few occasions when they will fall. As mentioned before, connecting an attachment to the massager requires some force and there is no feedback as a click to let you know that it is far enough away. So if you don't have a single push to the end, they can work on their own, especially during higher intensity levels.

Speaking of intensity, the biggest complaint I have about the Sportneer massager is that it can be a little too strong at settings above the first two levels. Again, this can be reduced to personal preferences and the lack of problem areas, but once I started raising the intensity levels above the second setting, I found that the combination of power and certain attachments are sometimes painful.

At these higher levels, I certainly couldn't tolerate more than a few seconds in certain places, and as you might guess, I found metal attachments to be the worst criminals here. So needless to say, I would have appreciated some softer tools, including some form of manual control for finer adjustments or extra intensities that lie between levels.

Massage therapists are a truly personal experience, which makes recommending the Sportneer massage weapon a little more difficult than your regular phone or smart home accessories. If you want or need an intense massage at home, then the Sportneer massage gun is definitely suitable. With five really powerful settings, six distinct attachments and a wireless design, there's a lot to love here.

However, if you are just looking for a casual, softer massage a few times a year, then you would be better suited to more "traditional" options at more affordable price points. However, if you have not experienced a percussion massage, then you should definitely look for one. It will change your perception of the category, as it certainly did for me.

Portable battery packs, once considered pleasant accessories, have become an essential part of our adventures through advances in capacity and miniaturization. With most sizes of phone batteries and even laptops, capable of being covered with solutions that you can fit in your pocket, our attention has now turned to keeping things once thought to be connected to the wall for the entire time in operation.

I recently started testing this portable boiler around my house and I liked to have a convenient battery, always ready, waiting for any crazy use case. As its name suggests, the RAVPower portable power plant comes in a compact, speaker-like form factor that measures just over seven inches high and five inches wide. The plant weighs about five and a half kilograms, thanks in part to its 252.7 Wh battery, 70,200 mAh, but includes a built-in handle to facilitate transport. In addition, the battery is included in a travel bag for extra portability and storage, along with a detachable carrying strap, charging adapter and USB cable.

Around the left of the battery are four total USB ports, three of which are USB-A and one USB-C port with Power Delivery. One of the three USB-A ports has a slightly larger output than the rest, coming from 5V / 3A to 18W, while the other ports are limited to 5V / 2.4A to 12W maximum. The USB-C port ramps things up to 60 W, which RAVPower announces is capable of charging a MacBook Pro in three hours.

On the right side of the battery, there is a single power button to switch the entire operation, as well as an integrated LED light. The white LED light is capable of displaying a permanent LED light, as well as an SOS pattern and a faster strobe effect. While I have not been able to follow the exact specifications of the light, I would match it with an LED flashlight and it is not something that will fill the whole room with light. The front of the battery has no ports or buttons, instead offering only five small status indicators.

The handle mentioned above can be found at the top of the battery, parked near a set of two 110V AC sockets with weatherproof covers. Output points can be used to power appliances and other devices up to 300 W, but the ports do not have a ground slot, which limits some applications. While actual AC operating times will vary, RAVPower lists things like refrigerators and lights that last several hours. The AC outlets use their own power button, which is located between the pair, and also have their own status indicator.

Charging takes place at the back of the battery, through a single continuous barrel-style input, which works with the included wall adapter. Although not included, the DC input works with solar panels and car chargers, in addition, next to it is a continuous output of 12V / 10A at 120W max. Near the rear tip, the portion is an exhaust outlet used to expel heat through a small fan when loading the package.

Make no mistake about it, the star of the show here is the extra battery capacity. Now, large battery packs are not a new thing, however, the boiler is the first in my household and just the fact that I have it around I constantly think about all the potential it unlocks. Including AC outlets only fuels my imagination, and I've already done things that weren't possible before, such as powering a smart camera with a smart wire, in a location that didn't have an outlet.

Including the LED light on the battery pack is also a favorite feature of mine, as I intend for the station to always be charged and ready to operate in an emergency. RAVPower could have left the light entirely and could still have been a compelling product, but the fact that you have it on board really helps to tell the story of how the battery can be used and is generally handy.

Including AC outlets only fuels my imagination, and I've already done things that weren't possible before, such as powering a smart wired camera in an unplugged location.

Other amenities include luggage storage and a USB-C cable. The included bag is not just a cheap garment with the purchase, because it has a premium look and design. The bag has a lot of compartments for accessories, and the divider inside clearly shows the optimal positioning for all the pieces of the puzzle, so you never have to wonder how to place everything so that everything fits. A detachable shoulder strap and the built-in handle on the bag are great for carrying everything around, and the USB-C cable, while not universal so far, is nice to have anywhere you go.

Finally, although the battery does not have a ton of ports, it includes the most important ones. With four total USB ports and two AC outlets, the battery is able to cover several needs simultaneously and I can easily see that it is a great success at outdoor meetings. On-board charging ports are also important, with passthrough capabilities that allow it to charge itself and other devices at the same time. The possibility of charging by direct current in the car, or even with a solar panel, is just ice on the cake.

As we could imagine, because the battery in the RAVPower Portable station is absolutely massive, it comes with some design compromises. The first of these is that the whole package is heavy for the category, reaching just over five kilograms. The other is that PowerStation is not something you can just throw in your pocket or gearbox when you are ready to go because of the overall size. The large capacity of the battery also means that the boiler generates heat when charging. Although the heat itself is not a problem, because the power station is usually connected to an outlet while it is being powered, but it inserts a fan into the mixture. When the fan is running, it is categorical visible, even in rooms with typical household activities. With the right accessories, such as a solar panel or a DC charger, this already flexible battery pack gets even better, allowing for an off-grid experience while still connected. The plant is certainly not for everyone, but for those who need serious power while walking, you will be hard pressed to find a better overall blend of portability and power.

The public beta of tvOS 14 is now available for those who want to experience the future of Apple TV today. Although it may not look so different from what you are currently using, the latest and greatest have some serious features.

tvOS 14: Beta be ready

As with other public bets for tvOS, to enter the new bundle requires registration in Apple's beta programs by registering at beta.apple.com. Even though the beta is available to the public today, just remember that It is another beta. That being said, tvOS 14 is generally more stable than the beta versions of iOS, due to the limited nature of the platform, and things have generally been solid so far. However, it is in the early days, so things may break in future versions, and the developer will not be able to update their applications for tvOS 14 until the actual launch later this year.

tvOS 14: Compatibility

TVOS 14 continues, you guessed it, all the top boxes of the Apple TV that come with the operating system included. This means that Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K get the newest and biggest models, but older, without the App Store, such as the third generation and earlier Apple TV, are left out.

The biggest thing you will notice even in the brakes in tvOS 14 is that it looks about the same as always. There are no drastic changes, such as the new widgets of iOS 14 and the App Library, only small changes scattered here and there. This means you'll be browsing Siri Remote or the perfect remote app to get to your favorite shows and movies, just like before, which is important for keeping things just a few clicks away.

My favorite visual change in tvOS 14 is a small improvement in user profiles. Although profiles are certainly underused on tvOS, they are a crucial part of the Apple TV experience with the Up Next feature. This changes to tvOS 14 with a simple notification that appears every time you wake Apple TV from sleep. The notification receives back everyone who was last logged in, filled in with the person's name and profile picture, which makes identification quick and easy. Of course, it is not an automatic process based on time or habits, but on the child's steps.

Another small change in tvOS 14 is the way Apple's wonderful screensavers are presented. Surprisingly, Apple didn't use the main WWDC video to announce new locations, or even mentioned the popular feature in general. However, behind the scenes, Apple has added a way to select which category of screens are displayed.

Removed in the screen save settings, you can now filter one or more of the four available categories: Landscape, Earth, Underwater, Cityscape. Once I discovered the feature, I immediately turned off Subwater, because jelly fish was definitely not a favorite in our household. However, it's a shame we have to say goodbye to everyone who protects the water-themed screen, because some of them were really nice. Here at tvOS 15?

tvOS 14: Picture-in-Picture

Ok, ok, there is only one visual change in tvOS 14 that you will notice, Picture-in-Picture! Apple knows that its TV is suitable for more than just binge watching, fitness apps, games and more being available for the platform. So it has finally brought the exclusive function for the iPad to the big screen, and everything about it is excellent. However, PiP support is not free, as the feature only works with applications that have been updated to support it.

Enabling PiP in compatible applications, such as the Apple TV application, is not the easiest feature to locate today. In essence, a pop-up video cassette will appear when watching videos, however, it is not always displayed. I found that the most reliable way to display it is after the pause and then resume a video. I would absolutely love for the feature to only work every time you press the Home button while watching videos, but I'm sure it will bring frustration to those who just want to escape the Home screen.

PiP also works great when AirPlaying video from your iOS devices, which will be useful for those times when your content doesn't have an Apple TV app. And for those wondering, yes, you can totally watch two of the same show on the big screen by this method, if you really wanted to, because, why not?

tvOS 14: 4K all things

By pasting visual images, Apple TV gets some new 4K experiences in tvOS 14. First, first of all, the YouTube app finally, yes, finally, it supports streaming video in 4K. The ultra-high definition 4K resolution has long been a painful place for those of us caught in the grip of Apple and Google on video codecs on all our favorite devices. In short, Google uses the VP9 codec for its YouTube catalog, which Apple has refused to support in favor of the AV1 codec.

Although we may not realize who withdrew or what exactly changed to bring this controversial feature, Apple dropped the ad after the main WWDC video, as a minor point for tvOS 14. Needless to say, the addition it's huge for the platform and it's one that most users will use every day to get funny videos about cats.

Speaking of 4K, tvOS 14 also adds support for sharing videos recorded in high definition format on the big screen via AirPlay. Of course, tvOS has always had the ability to show and play videos and photos directly from the Photos app via iCloud, but having the ability to share in 4K via AirPlay makes Apple TV accessible to everyone in a household or even guests.

tvOS 14: HomeKit

Despite being on several of our wish lists, tvOS 14 does not bring the Home app to our TVs. tvOS do what however, it brings support for HomeKit cameras in a surprisingly elegant way.

So far, the camera experience in tvOS 14 has been wonderful, but I've seen a few bugs where full screen viewing will drop randomly or audio will stop. I'm not sure if the function intends to have a certain term, but I saw it in both ways, in which the feed will stop after a minute or not at all, which leads me to believe that it is a beetle.

HomeKit bells will support notifications from tvOS 14 whenever the day comes when one is available. In combination with face recognition technology, tvOS will present a live view in a small window when a bell rings, complete with the name of the person at the door.

This feature works with photo tagging that you may already be using on iOS and macOS, there is no need to train the Home app or assign a name manually. If you want to do a little work, you can access a log of all home visitors in the Home app on iOS, but you shouldn't do it the way it should.

tvOS 14: Gambling

The addition of Apple Arcade last year brought new life to the gaming scene on Apple TV, after years of stagnation and notable departures from the title. In tvOS 14, Apple continues to intensify its gaming efforts, using Game Center, another platform-specific feature that has been brought back from the dead.

Through user profiles, Arcade games on tvOS 14 will be able to sync and resume progress on all Apple platforms. So the next time a member of your household wants to continue where he left off in Sneaky Sasquatch or Castle Crossy Road, he can do so without destroying your progress or spending all the money you earn. As you probably guessed, this bit me before, because I'm quite a fan of Sasquatch.

The GameOS functionality from tvOS 14 also introduces deeper social elements into the game and through the App Store and Arcade applications. User profiles will display player-specific friend lists for easier access to achievements, challenges, and invitations. Game Center suggestions will also appear online through each store, with titles your friends have recently played and progress made to encourage involvement.

Finally, as much as I would like to see Apple take on its own game controllers to strengthen the platform, tvOS 14 expands the compatible options. Along with the traditional Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers, tvOS 14 adds support for Xbox Elite 2 with unfavorable Microsoft prices and the insecure Xbox adaptable controller.

tvOS 14: Audio

During the unveiling of TVOS 14, we were struck by the visions of setting HomePod as a permanent audio output for Apple TV. Unfortunately, this did not materialize, but we still managed to get a nice audio function instead.

Audio sharing is now transformed into tvOS allowing the ability to set two pairs of AirPod as audio output. As I am the only one in my household who has never offered iconic photos, I have not been able to test this feature, but I can easily see this extremely useful in situations where more people want to enjoy great sound, but you have to keep quiet in the house.

When it comes to TV, privacy is not a topic we often think about, except when smart TVs are caught sending everything we do to data brokers or even sharing images from the built-in cameras. Say what you want about the price and capabilities of Apple TV compared to cheaper alternatives, but I appreciate the level of commitment that Apple makes to privacy for all its platforms, which is worth it.

In iOS 14 and tvOS 14, Apple has introduced a new tracking setting, which now applies to third-party applications. Applications developed for tvOS 14 will now require the user's permission to watch the first release, which uses an identifier that combines activity in certain applications.

Now, I'm sure there are some legitimately useful features that could be enabled by combining data from apps, but you better think we've disabled this when we discovered this feature. If you choose to disable it, you will be given the option to disable it for all applications or allow the applications you have granted permission to keep track of and stop additional requests.

Moving on to the restrictions, the changes in tvOS 14 refer to the Game Center to go along with the emphasis on extended user profiles. Although the first years of wireless freedom were a bit rough around the edges, Arlo continued to refine its line with improvements in battery life and, of course, with high-quality visual images. The Arlo line has also grown from the original wireless system, with the company having a form factor for all kinds of applications - seven in total starting today.

Launched at the end of 2019, the Arlo Pro 3 is the company's latest prosumer model, which has an amazing amount of features, including 2K resolution with HDR. Last month I tested the two-camera Arlo Pro 3 system and found that it offers all the essentials. Wireless freedom, excellent image quality and accessories such as an integrated spotlight and siren make it stand out, although it comes with a few big catches.

As mentioned earlier, the Arlo Pro 3 wireless security camera system we tested includes two cameras, along with the Arlo SmartHub. Arlo's SmartHub connects to home routers via an included ethernet cable, allowing it to manage wireless cameras in a way that reduces local network traffic. SmartHub can reach cameras up to 300 meters away with a direct viewing line on a 2.4 GHz radio signal. Behind the SmartHub is a single USB port, which allows the hub to work with hard drives for local storage, but after configuration, interactions with the hub will be rare.

Going beyond the real cameras, the 4 megapixels Pro 3 are capable of producing a maximum resolution of 2560x1440 with a field of view of 160 degrees. In addition to 2K, the Pro 3 can stream and record videos in HD 1080p and 720p resolution, and sports infrared LEDs with Cut Filter for black and white night vision. The Pro 3 can also produce color images at night, thanks to an integrated adjustable reflector, which can achieve up to 42 lux of brightness at the highest setting. The spot can be activated manually, while the camera is streaming, or with motion events.

Because the cameras are completely wireless, each is based on a removable and removable lithium polymer battery. The battery capacity is listed as 4800mAh, which says Arlo should last between three to six months with regular use. Batteries can be charged in the camera case via an included magnetic charging cable or, as they are removable, can be set in charging station accessories for added convenience. Since the Pro 3 cameras are my first from Arlo, I was surprised to see the removable batteries, a rarity for the wireless camera category. I was also pleasantly surprised by the charging process, in general, with an elegant magnetic cable, which is fixed right in place of a camera.

Of course, with other wireless cameras around my house today, I was thrilled to see how the performance of the Pro 3 system compares. Although it wasn't all roses, the two Arlo Pro 3 cameras installed on opposite sides of my house worked pretty much the same. it was to be expected, each with a signal strong enough to transmit its images on demand. Extracting a live stream via the Arlo app and the Apple Home app took about five seconds on most occasions, with a few random attacks rising between 8 and 10 seconds.

The image quality also met my expectations, although I can't really say whether or not the camera lives up to its 2K claims. When I tested the interior cameras, the image quality was fantastic, with easily discernible details and low noise. The same thing extended to night vision with traditional black-and-white infrared images producing a clear and crisp view in the dark. Turning on the integrated spotlights added a splash of color to the same view, which was great for such a low scenario.

Things were a little different, but once the rooms were installed outdoors. I immediately saw a reduction in quality from both Pro 3 cameras, especially at night, and despite the app indicating that I was watching a 2K stream. This does not mean that the visual images were terrible, they were reduced to a level that matches other cameras we tested, even with reflective light. As with all wireless cameras, performance will vary depending on placement and distance, but for the lengths in which mine are installed, they are definitely good.

Despite the premium price tag and the full range of hardware features, the Arlo Pro 3 locks several smart security staples behind a subscription. One of these is cloud storage for recorded records, which is understandable given that storage and servers almost certainly require a certain cost on Arlo's part. The lack of cloud storage is also affected by the ability to attach a hard drive to the Arlo SmartHub, so it's not the biggest offer, but I would have liked to see at least 24 hours of cloud storage for free.

However, what is great is the areas of activity, which require the Arlo Smart service. Without Arlo Smart, Pro 3 owners will receive notifications for everything that happens in the camera's vision, which could go crazy depending on where it is installed. Many of Arlo's competitors, including more affordable options from brands such as eufy, offer completely free areas of activity and image analysis and are processed locally on the device.

This makes Arlo's subscription essentially necessary, which will be hard for some to swallow after taking out about $ 500 for a two-camera system. During my review of Arbo's Video Doorbell just a few months ago, I noticed that the lack of areas as a standard feature was really something to consider. I was I was able to analyze the subscription requirements for my special installation location, so I was fully aware that this will extend to the company's rooms, but I still have to pay for the feature.

While Arlo Pro 3 cameras support the Apple HomeKit, some key features are missing. Yes, you can view a live stream from the Home app, and you can create motion-based automations with it, but that's about it. The built-in spotlight is nowhere to be found, as well as support for HomeKit Secure Video, which is disappointing to say the least. I'd love to see Pro 3 work with my iCloud storage subscription, and I'd definitely love to see it work with Apple's work area features, which come in iOS 14. Sure, HomeKit Secure Video could be added in a future update, but I'm not relying on that, as Arlo seems to want to continue with his own services.

AppleKomeKit, introduced back in iOS 8, has made huge strides over the years, which has allowed it to fill gaps in features, potential for automation and accessory categories. I tested PureFlow in the last week and a half and I can say that it was definitely worth the wait. This smart purifier goes beyond the basics, providing sensors for important interior measurements, covers larger areas, has excellent performance and, of course, supports HomeKit. Let's dive!

VOCOlinc PureFlow offers a clean, thin, mostly white plastic with a 5.1-inch large LCD and a colored air quality status light on the front. Even though it is mostly made of plastic for the frame, the purifier has some heavy weights, reaching about 20 kg. The purifier is similar to other medium-sized purifiers on the market, measuring 22.24 inches high by 11.42 inches for width and depth. The upper part of the purifier is flat, with a large circular air outlet that covers most of the surface. The top also includes a series of eight touch-sensitive buttons to switch various functions, such as fan speed and timer, along with a separate power button.

PureFlow uses a dual filtration system, with easily accessible compartments for each located on the sides of the unit. Although there are two air filters, they are identical, sharing the same three-stage design that includes a pre-filter, a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. VOCOlinc states that filters are capable of removing up to 99.7% of gases and particles up to 0.3 microns. Filtered contaminants include formaldehyde, pollen, allergens, smoke, odors, dust, mold, bacteria and toothpicks. PureFlow includes four total speed settings and an automatic mode that allows it to rise and fall depending on automatic air quality measurements. VOCOlinc lists operational noise levels as between 30 and 55 decibels, with the lowest level being reached by activating a dedicated night mode. In addition to a lower speed, the night mode turns off the LCD screen and all indicators, which is a nice touch when used in bedrooms.

The VOCOlinc air purifier houses several smart sensors, a pm2.5 sensor for air quality, one for temperature and, finally, one for humidity. The LCD screen puts real-time measurements in front and in the center, with large, easy-to-read fonts and an adaptive brightness setting, automatically adjusts throughout the day to make sure you can always see the display. Along with the key values, the display shows the current fan speed and the status indicators of the features, such as that for a child lock that prevents accidental changes.

Smart home connectivity is enabled via 2.4 ghz Wi-Fi directly to home networks without a separate hub. As mentioned earlier, PureFlow works with Apple's HomeKit, as well as Amazon and Google Assistant for voice controls and automation. The purifier also connects to the VOCOlinc application, which includes all the same controls and measurements that are located on the device. Despite its large size and weight, disconnecting and configuring PureFlow was fairly easy. Most of the installation is removing it from the box, opening the filter access doors, removing the protective plastic and connecting it. The pairing process was quick and familiar, as I was able to set it up using only the iOS Home app built into the iPhone. Learn the exercise here, open the Home app, tap Add accessory, and scan the association code with your camera, and you're on your way. Of course, the pairing process will look a little different if you use the VOCOlinc app, especially if you use it on Android.

Commands sent to the remote air purifier are executed on the device extremely fast, as if almost instantly. The same can be said for voice commands through Siri once you realize the correct phrasing to use (more on that later). The purifier was also reliable in terms of reliability, being quick to update its status when opening the Home application and I still haven't found situations where it didn't respond completely.

Since the living and kitchen areas of my house are open concepts, I was able to place the purifier between them, which allowed it to be seen from a wide variety of angles in each room. With the wide coverage area of ​​the purifier, it is actually the perfect solution for my household and comes with the added benefit of removing a few redundant accessories that are dedicated to functions such as temperature monitoring.

Now, with all the air purifiers, without having severe allergies or air quality issues in the area where I live, it's hard to say that I can tell the difference in the home after I have PureFlow up and running last week. What I can say for sure, though, is that the actual measurements of the pm2.5 sensors are in line with other sensors in the same room, with no wild variations.

I can also say that I can definitely feel a large amount of air movement from the purifier, even at the lowest setting, which leads me to believe that it is really able to cover larger areas as it claims. Finally, I can say that I absolutely like how quiet the purifier works. At lowest speed, which is implicit with reduced pm2.5 readings, and in night mode, the purifier noise level is between 35-39 decibels depending on a raw measurement made by my AppleWatch and Noise application. This allows the purifier to work all day and night in my house, without interfering with conversations or just the usual everyday things, which is nice.

Let's not beat around the bush here, VOCOlinc PureFlow and its price of 400 USD is expensive. When coupled with the cost of replacing not one, but Two, filters every six months for regular use, makes PureFlow more of a product that needs careful attention before jumping straight. Since the purifier is the first HomeKit option for the North American market, I am willing to give it some passage here. However, I would like to see a more affordable option available sooner rather than later.

While HomeKit is the star of the show, at least for me, there are definitely some limitations you should know. First, HomeKit does not support setting the display brightness and night mode directly from the Home or Siri application. Yes, you can switch the night mode setting using a third-party HomeKit app and a shortcut, but this is far too large for regular users who just want quick and easy access to it.

Another aspect of HomeKit is that setting the fan speed via Siri voice commands is not the most intuitive. On the purifier itself and through the VOCOlinc application, the speeds are listed in a series of numbers, from zero to five, the latter being the highest setting. Of course, when I tried to adjust Siri to adjust its speeds via iPhone or HomePod, I immediately tried to use the number scheme, which led to a complete malfunction or setting the speed to 0 regardless of the number you -I used.

This initially led me to believe that Siri simply did not accept the position, which was disappointing. Finally, I was shown that using percentages was probably the answer I was looking for, just as the speed of the HomeKit ceiling fan works. When all is said and done, the VOCOlinc PureFlow smart air purifier was definitely worth the wait for HomeKit fans. Even though VOCOlinc could have covered the route easily just by providing the basics for the North American debut categories, it went further and further, offering a complete home air monitoring package. The additional capabilities of the PureFlow sensor, quiet operation, solid reliability and fantastic response times make it one of the best air purifiers I've tested.

Sure, the cost of ownership may be a little on the high side, but it's comparable to other smart purifiers that offer the same large coverage area. So, if you are in the market for such an air purifier, it is definitely worth taking a look even if you do not use HomeKit, and if you do, then by all means get it, the wait is over!

The air we breathe daily inside is a critical part of our health and well-being, but even more importantly, it is often overlooked. In the western part of the world, air purifiers are not yet a household base, and potentially harmful gases are not detected by conventional home monitors. While smart technology has certainly maintained top air quality, there is still a long way to go before it becomes commonplace.

This is especially true with Radon, with its deadly links to lung cancer with long-term exposure, but for one reason or another, it just isn't in everyone's mind. As with other eye-openers, such as indoor VOCs and CO2, the smart home sector is trying to change that with products like Airthings Wave Plus, which I tested in my house last month. This compact but capable sensor measures almost anything, including Radon, and does so with an easy setup process and an intelligible application, making it an excellent solution for smart security in any home.

You feel everything

Airthings Wave Plus looks like a typical smoke detector, with a round, white design that can be mounted on walls or ceilings. The front of the device is filled with small air intakes, along with two built-in areas near the bottom, used to detect movement and power. Positioned in the center of the Wave Plus is a large light ring that provides a quick overview of the air in the house through a number of different colors, such as green for good.

At the back of the sensor are two compartments of the AA battery that keep it running completely wireless for up to 16 months. The back of the sensor is magnetized, allowing it to attach to a removable mounting plate without having to position it in place. A single screw is included for mounting, which is inserted directly into the center of the board, making installation quick, and also works well, being set on top of a surface such as a table or countertop, if needed.

In addition to Radon, Wave Plus includes sensors for five other indoor values: temperature, humidity, VOCs, air pressure and CO2. Wave Plus, like most sensors, does not offer truly accurate measurements, and in this case, the provision of Airthings can achieve accuracy within 10% after the first seven days and 5% after two months. When critical levels are detected, the sensor can sound an audible alarm to raise awareness in the home and can be silenced for a month, giving homeowners time to make any necessary changes.

The data collected by Wave Plus is stored locally on the device for up to 80 days and is synced with the Airthings Wave app, available on iOS and Android, for historical tracking. Wave Plus communicates with the application via Bluetooth, which makes the setup process faster without having to enter a Wi-Fi password. Airthings provides all recent measurements in numerical form, along with a status ring that mimics the one on the device, on a home screen that is displayed when the application is launched. Clicking on a measurement will show additional data points and a line graph that can display readings from the previous 48 hours, week, month, or year. All sensor data is also available through a web portal, accessible from any desktop browser, which makes it easier to discern exactly when a problematic measurement has taken place.

Accessing data and features through the Airthings Wave app or web portal app doesn't require a subscription, which is surprising (in a good way), given the recent push for almost anything. Wave Plus works with Alexa Amazon, Google Assistant and IFTTT, for convenient voice checks via voice. Once connected to a smart assistant, a general overview can be called upon request, as well as room-specific data or metrics through commands such as "Check radon". Unfortunately, the sensor does not support Apple HomeKit or Siri shortcuts.

As previously mentioned, Airthings Wave Plus connects directly to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth, which makes the initial setup process a breeze. After logging out, simply download the Airthings app, create an account and follow a few directions to launch and run, it's really that simple. For the initial setup, I chose to place Wave Plus on a table, and after it was connected, I mounted it on a wall with the hardware included, just as easily. This is largely due to the careful design of the mount, which uses a screw to hold a magnetic wall plate, which allows the Wave Plus to attach to it just lining the back of it. Because the sensor is battery powered, this great design will make the replacement process quick and not something I'm afraid of.

Always with the Wave Plus design, I like how compact and unbearable the sensor is. There are no lights, always on, or ridiculous, look at the brand style that can be found here, which allows it to properly match the smoke detectors that already exist in the house. Of course, this extends to the large ring of LED light, which only lights up when you walk or wave your hand in front of it, which is a pretty nice touch. I love being able to get a quick status check on demand, and even better, I absolutely love that you can silence any critical alarm with a wave.

Moving on to performance, even using Bluetooth for connectivity, which is notorious for being slower and having a shorter range than Wi-Fi, I still haven't solved any issues. Wave Plus remained solid for a few weeks when I tested it, syncing the data every time I opened the Airthings app. Yes, it takes a few seconds to get the latest data, but we are talking about charts between five and ten seconds, nothing recklessly long or frustrating here.

Of course, the real star of the show here is the crazy amount of sensors that are included inside. The inclusion of Radon monitoring is also huge for the smart home world and for safety in general, as it seems to be one of those values ​​that are often overlooked, despite its importance. I'll admit, before testing Wave Plus, I had no clue what the levels of Radon in my house were or what the acceptable measurements were, but it was always something I was interested in finding out about.

That being said, I was quite happy to learn that the levels of my house were safe after calibration, especially with the children in the house. Along with the LED indicator for status and application measurements, I was impressed by the way Airthings offers a detailed but easy-to-understand breakdown of all its measurement capabilities, complete with explanations of the real dangers on tolerance levels. These explanations include steps you can take to bring things into acceptable areas, such as "experimenting with ventilation" for slightly elevated Radon levels, or "contact a professional Radon attenuator" if things get out of hand. For other values, such as CO2 that my house struggles with, the app even includes some of the symptoms I might face depending on the amount in the house, which may be eye-catching for some.

While setting up the Airthings Wave Plus was extremely quick and easy, the sensor itself requires time to calibrate before providing an accurate picture of the air inside. In this case, the sensor takes a full week to establish a reliable measurement for some values ​​and at least an hour for others. Now, the Airthings app will really give you data during the calibration process, it will only include a message saying that it is still in the process. The process is not the biggest issue, and I certainly understand and appreciate that Airthings wants to make sure the data it provides is valid, but as with all things shiny and new, it was just a little disappointing that it didn't. was 100% ready to go after installation.

Disappointingly, despite the fact that I have integration capabilities with Alexa, IFTTT and Google Assistant, Airthings Wave Plus does not support my smart platform of choice: AppleKomeKit. Wave Plus seems like a natural fit for HomeKit, as it offers a lot of features that are baked into the Apple platform and connect via Bluetooth, another common HomeKit connection method. Because I like the sensor so much, I will look for ways to conjure data through Siri via IFTTT and shortcuts, which is possible, but I'd rather not have to go this route.

Finally, I think the price for Wave Plus is a bit high. Compared to other smart home monitors with similar capabilities (apart from Radon), Wave Plus is slightly two to three times more expensive. I guess the higher price point is really due to Radon monitoring, but I would definitely like to lower it to more affordable levels, because indoor air quality is a vital part of maintaining a healthy home environment.

As with the limited number of HomeKit accessories available compared to other voice assistants, Apple's smart home ecosystem has struggled over the years to offer affordable alternatives, causing many to miss the platform's wonderful power. VOCOlinc's latest store accessories include the first HomeKit air purifier for the North American market and a lightweight wallet contact sensor. Yes, the PureFlow Smart Air Purifier from VOCOlinc is without a doubt one of the most anticipated HomeKit accessories to date, but the company's VS1 contact sensor is just as important. This compact sensor opens the door to affordable automation and DIY security for everyone and does so with fast, reliable times, with an easy setup process.

VOCOlinc VS1 follows the test and true design language of the wireless contact sensor, which uses magnets to determine whether or not a door or window is open. The larger of the two white, plastic portions houses the smarts, the thinner part being something other than a magnet in an elegantly coordinated shell. The sensor has an LED light ring that lights up when its status is updated and is also the only button on the entire package that is used to reset it. Both pieces attach directly to doors, windows or almost anything that opens and closes, with a shell and a stick of adhesive tape included.

The VS1 is powered by a single-coin CR2032 battery, which lasts up to six months with regular use and is located on the back. The battery compartment has slots, which allows easy removal using a coin or other small tool with a twist. The sensor connects directly to the HomeKit via Bluetooth 5.0 and can be fully configured via the Apple Home application with a scan of the pairing code found in the instruction manual (the one on the device cannot be scanned). Setup should, in most cases, take less than 10 minutes in total, including disconnecting, mounting, and pairing.

Once paired, the VS1 can be displayed as a basic contact sensor, door, window, blinds or garage door opener, making Siri controls more natural. An example of this is "Hey Siri, is the front door open?", But outside of playback status, there aren't too many interactions other than automation. The automations allow the VS1 to act as a trigger for other accessories, so it can be used to turn on the lights at the entrance to the house or to turn off the thermostat when a window is opened.

In the VOCOlinc application, users can check the status of the sensor and perform firmware updates when available (one of which is already available). The VOCOlinc app also acts like other third-party HomeKit apps, with full control over home accessories, but the actual device-specific things for VS1 are pretty limited, so there's no compelling reason to use it over the home app.

Even though the VS1 has a typical two-piece magnetic design, it's more than typical when it comes to placement. The VOCOlinc offer is the first contact sensor we have tested, which can lift the magnetic portion from any direction, which makes its installation quick and easy, because you don't have to worry too much about the right place. Certainly, some sensors can detect the accompanying magnets on both sides, but VS1 can actually detect it in the upper and lower areas as well, which makes it extremely flexible. This capability also translates to the placement distance between the two in general, with VS1 having the longest range I've seen so far, which is great.

The design of the VOCOlinc VS1 contact sensor is also first class, apart from a tiny issue that we will talk about later. The magnetic sensations and portions are incredibly thin, which makes competing sensors such as the ecobee SmartSensor for Doors and Windows look huge compared to it. Although the size of the sensor does not affect performance, the sensor is slightly two to three times weaker than others, which allows it to fit better in the house. I also like the ring-shaped LED indicator light because it is bright enough to actually see that it is responding to an open or close event, which is not the case with other sensors.

The magnetic sensations and portions are extremely thin, which makes competing sensors, such as the ecobee SmartSensor for Doors and Windows, look extremely much compared to it.

Moving on to current performance, the VS1, like other Bluetooth-based sensors, doesn't offer instant response times fast enough, but it's fast enough for most scenarios. On average, notifications sent or automations from the Home app when my kitchen door opened within two to three seconds of the event, which is equal to the course of the category. On rare occasions, we see that response times slip a little, some cases being up to six seconds, which for HomeKit is also equal to the journey, sometimes, unfortunately. In terms of reporting the current status of the Home app, I still haven't had any issues with Unanswered and VS1, which is one of the advantages of Bluetooth, because it always works, at least for me.

The best thing about VS1, though, is the affordable price. Even at its full list price, which it hasn't actually been since its debut, the VS1 is nearly half the cost of Bluetooth competitors, covering an entire home wallet. VOCOlinc currently offers VS1 in both single and double packaging options on Amazon, the latter offering additional savings. The savings extend to batteries, as it uses one of the most common coin battery sizes, which not only makes replacements easy to find, but can be found at prices of almost a dollar each.

Despite the low price of replacement batteries, the VOCOlinc sensor does not have the highest life expectancy. With only six months to go before it needs to be replaced, VS1 lags behind competitors such as Eve Door and Window, which can go up to a year and a half. HomeKit options that use a hub, such as Abode Mini Door and Window Sensor, can easily reach two years of use before replacement.

When it comes to the actual replacement of the battery on the VS1, the design of the sensor can make things a little more difficult than you should just do if you lip and mount it. Because it uses a two-sided tape mounting system, removing the sensor down to replace the battery results in the tape no longer being usable. Now, of course, you can avoid this with a little planning before placement, but I would have preferred a velcro-style mounting tape, such as the Abode Mini, mentioned above, to make things easier.

My last complaint is about Bluetooth in general, because it has some limitations and potential issues that you need to be aware of. Bluetooth range, in particular, is much shorter than Wi-Fi, so if you have a larger home, you may experience inconsistent response times or connectivity, and it can only be accessed locally. Both issues can be reversed by a resident HomeKit hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod, that allows remote access and, depending on placement, can cover certain dead areas in the home. Finally, Bluetooth also limits the VS1 to work only through the VOCOlinc app and HomeKit, neither Alexa nor Google Assistant here, which I fail to write all this often.

Battery life and Bluetooth limitations aside, the VOCOlinc VS1 contact sensor is a great addition to any HomeKit household.
