Leaks Reveal Apple Smart Home Accessory Details, Highlighting Crucial Samsung Upgrades

Cupertino, July 8, 2024

In this episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, we discuss the latest rumors surrounding Apple's unannounced smart home accessory, plus Samsung's new update to Matter, and go hands-on with some new gear.

In news this week, we saw two new products hit the market. The first is the Anona Holo Wi-Fi Smart Lock, which is Matter-compatible and can convert existing doors. There's also the Ambient One air quality monitor, designed for creative spaces. This is launching as a Kickstarter, but the design looks promising and it's expected to support Apple Home. It has an all-aluminum body, with a subtle e-ink display on the front. It's magnetic, so it can stick to your crafts. Alternatively, it can stand sideways, supported by its orange handle.

Also last week, Samsung became the first smart home platform to support Matter 1.2. That includes refrigerators, washing machines and more new appliance types. In the podcast, we speculate on what Apple’s plans are with only the announcement of support for robot vacuums and no other new device types for iOS 18. We close out the episode by talking about the new leaks surrounding Apple’s smart home display. It appears to have an A18 variant chip inside and a forked version of tvOS. With those internals, the device could support Apple Intelligence. Unfortunately, these leaks don’t give us any clues as to when this device might launch.
