Adding a Matter Smart Home device to Apple Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Cupertino, February 22, 2024

Matter opens the doors to a whole new world of automation possibilities and device types for Apple Home users thanks to cross-platform connectivity. But before you can take advantage of Matter, you need to know how to add a device to your smart home using your iPhone or iPad.

With just a few taps, your Matter devices are up and running in the Apple Home app. We'll show you how.

Matter and Apple Home: What you need

Before you can properly use your Matter device with automation, you need to make sure you have the right equipment. To get started, you'll need a compatible Matter smart home device. Currently, compatible Matter devices include light bulbs, switches, blinds, sockets, locks, thermostats and sensors. If you're unsure if your device supports Matter, check for a pairing code sticker on the device, on the included packaging, or digitally via the on-screen menus. Some devices, such as the Nest Thermostat, Eve Energy Smart Plug or Aqara smart hubs, support Matter via a firmware update. If your device didn't come with a code, you'll likely find it in the companion app after the update.

You'll also need to set up an Apple Home Hub. An Apple Home Hub (an Apple TV or HomePod) acts as a Matter Controller for your home, unlocking remote outdoor access for your devices. Like your iPhone or iPad, your Home Hub must be up to date and connected to the same Apple ID you use for your smart home. Finally, you need to be within range of your smart device and make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on.

How to Add a Matter Device to the Apple Home App

If you're familiar with adding a smart home product to Apple HomeKit, you'll feel right at home with Matter. Start by launching the Apple Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Next, tap the + button in the top right corner of your screen and then tap Add Accessory. Scan your device's Matter pairing code with your camera, then tap Add to Home. Once you find your device, the Home app offers several customization options. First assign your device to a location or room in your home, then tap Continue. Now name your device using the on-screen keyboard, tap Done, and then tap Continue. Select any additional display options or features (such as assigning a smart plug as a light, fan, or power outlet), then tap Continue again. Finally, tap Done to complete the installation process.

Removing a Matter device from your home

Similar to adding a Matter smart device to Apple Home, you can remove it with just a few taps. To do this, launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and then tap General. Next, tap Matter Accessories and then swipe left on the device you want to remove. Now tap Remove from Keychain to disconnect from Apple Home or Remove from All Services to remove it from all platforms. Alternatively, you can also remove a Matter device from the Apple Home app. After launching the Home app, tap the More... button and then tap the room your device is in. Tap your device and then tap the Settings icon in the bottom right corner. Scroll down and then tap 'Remove Accessory', followed by 'Remove' again.

Apple Home in a matter of minutes

With your Matter devices in the Home app, you're ready to control your smart home through scenes, groups, Siri and automation. And thanks to cross-platform connectivity, you can easily share your Matter devices with other voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
