Arlo Pro 4: Security camera theoretically requires no hub, but in the end it does

Cupertino, January 2, 2022

The Arlo Pro 4 is already the fourth generation of the battery-powered security camera. Unlike its predecessor, the camera can connect directly to the home network via Wi-Fi. At least in theory, because for the integration into Apple HomeKit, a hub is still needed.

The Arlo Pro 4 has a built-in Spotlight with motion detection, 2-way audio for alerting or intercom, and a built-in siren that can be triggered either manually or automatically when motion is detected.

Recordings are stored on an internal SD card or in the manufacturer's cloud for an additional fee. However, HomeKit Secure Video is not integrated.

Apple HomeKit still requires a hub

What makes the Arlo Pro 4 special is that it connects directly over Wi-Fi. This, at least in theory, eliminates the need for a hub. So while Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and SmartThings work without a hub, a SmartHub or base station is still needed for integration with Apple HomeKit.

The Arlo Pro 4 is available from Amazon. The starter set with hub and one camera currently costs €352.23, two cameras cost €609.16, three cameras cost €704.98, and four cameras cost €870.15.

If you are looking for a cheap alternative, we can recommend the eufyCam 2C. The cameras, which are also battery-powered, support HomeKit Secure Video and are currently available as a starter set with hub and two cameras for under 200€. Simply activate the coupon on the product page.
