CarPlay gets enhanced garage door features by Honda and Acura

Cupertino, October 9, 2023

Honda and Acura are expanding their focus on CarPlay by adding support for smart garage door openers to their respective CarPlay apps. Currently, CarPlay works with HomeKit to provide information and control options for garage doors. However, this new feature from Honda and Acura allows even non-HomeKit-compatible smart garage doors to be accessed via CarPlay. To make this possible, Honda has partnered with Chamberlain Group's myQ Connected Garage service. While there are dedicated HomeKit garage door accessories available, Autoblog notes that the integration with MyQ allows many people to enjoy this feature without purchasing extra hardware.

To use this technology, a compatible garage door opener is required, but chances are you already have one as myQ is compatible with most openers on the market, including LiftMaster and other Chamberlain brands. If your opener is already myQ activated, no further action is needed. However, if you have an older style, Honda provides a free 'myQ Smart Garage Control device' to upgrade your opener. To receive the device, you simply need to sign up for the service's 30-day demo subscription, so there's no need to worry about purchasing one.

After the trial period, Honda offers a smart services subscription at $129 for three years or $179 for five years. The garage door functions can be accessed through the CarPlay apps for HondaLink and AcuraLink, which can be downloaded from the App Store. Notably, you can set up a geofence that will notify you through CarPlay to open or close your garage door based on your current location. Additionally, the garage door can be controlled manually using the HondaLink or AcuraLink app via CarPlay.

Honda states that all their 2023 and 2024 vehicles will support this new CarPlay feature. They also mention that "millions of older Honda and Acura models" with CarPlay will be compatible, although further details are currently unclear. To learn more and set up the new CarPlay features, you can download the latest versions of the HondaLink and AcuraLink apps from the App Store.
