HomeKit Insider Podcast

In this episode, Johnathan Hui and Sujata Neidig join Thread Group's HomeKit Insider podcast to explain the latest news and talk about changes to Thread networks. Despite the avalanche resulting from CES, there was still Apple Home news to share on this week's podcast, including more product announcements. During the electronics show we saw a new travel safe with Find My functionality. French company UpFiner is launching a new portable bag that lets you store small items while you travel, which syncs with the Find My app and sounds an alarm when it's moved. In addition to last week's products, Nanoleaf is also releasing a new set of hanging string lights. The Nanoleaf String Lights are Matter compatible and perfect for a terrace or patio. GE has expanded its line of Matter products to include cabinet lighting, light bulbs, smart outdoor plugs, wall switches, can lighting and more. Kef releases its new LSX II LT speakers. These include AirPlay support and other smart features like USB-C, premium audio, HDMI ARC input and more. After the new product releases, we talked about the Find My app. Apple has now increased the Find My Devices limit from 16 to 32. We also heard that First Alert products will continue, including the much-loved Safe & Sound product that combines a smoke detector and an AirPlay speaker. Finally, we were told on-site at CES that Apple has chosen to discontinue its HomeKit router program and will no longer accept new models for certification. This could explain why there haven't been new and faster routers since the first Wi-Fi 6 routers were released. We'll wrap up the show with an in-depth discussion with our guests from the Thread Group and what the new changes mean for Thread in 2024.
