Daily View: Apple TV 4K's tvOS 17 Update Expands Possibilities as a Home Hub

Cupertino, September 19, 2023

tvOS 17 is now set to be released, bringing along a new and exciting feature for Apple TV 4K users. They can now make and receive FaceTime calls directly from their TV. Additionally, calls initiated on an iPhone or iPad can be seamlessly transferred to the Apple TV thanks to Continuity Camera support. This feature utilizes the camera and microphone of the paired iPhone or iPad to continue the FaceTime call. Furthermore, Webex and Zoom are also launching tvOS apps that will utilize Continuity Camera.

Aside from this, the redesigned Control Center is garnering a lot of attention. It beautifully integrates with HomeKit accessories and apps to create the Home app. Apple continues its trend of creating everyday words like "Apple" and "home" to label its own inventions. On a positive note, Apple is using the Matter Open Source connectivity standard, supported by Google and Amazon, to allow a wider range of smart home devices to connect to its services.

However, there still remains a widespread feeling that Apple has neglected HomeKit. Unlike most fashionable Apple products, HomeKit is highly utilitarian. Appliances such as washing machines, lighting, locks, and refrigerators are generally considered boring or "white goods." Integrating with HomeKit can be challenging due to the extensive variety of smart devices available on the market. These devices often come with their own software applications, not optimized for connectivity and reliability, which poses potential integration problems with HomeKit.

While leading manufacturers like LG or Samsung invest significantly in ensuring compatibility, not all consumers are willing or financially able to limit themselves exclusively to these brands. Additionally, a strong and reliable WiFi connection, which requires a high-quality router, is essential for seamless operation of these devices. Unfortunately, most households are reluctant to invest in this crucial component and settle for whatever their ISP provides. Despite the excitement surrounding tvOS 17 and its features, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that smart home devices work together seamlessly.
