Ecobee introduced a new video doorbell today, which has some positive aspects but also lacks one key feature. However, considering its price of US$159.99, it may still attract some customers. The good news is that it is compatible with HomeKit. The downside is that it does not currently utilize HomeKit Secure Video (HSV), but it could potentially be added later, similar to what happened with Ecobee's Ecobee Smart Camera (watch the video HERE, review HERE), which initially only worked with Ecobee's Smart Security subscription service but later added HSV through an update.
Despite the lack of this feature, the doorbell offers a wider viewing angle compared to Aqara's G4 video doorbell, allowing for a 180º diagonal view (175º vertical, 115º horizontal). This provides better package detection and a more comprehensive view of the front of your home. It supports 1080p recording at up to 30fps, has HDR and night vision up to 30ft away, two-way audio with noise cancellation, and a large button with a welcoming green LED that also serves as an indicator for those using the doorbell. It is also rated IP65 for outdoor use. The doorbell does not have a battery-powered option and must be hardwired, which is likely a better solution for most users.
However, the standout feature that surprised many is the ability to live stream the video feed from the doorbell to an Ecobee thermostat. This could be a deciding factor for those who already own the Smart Thermostat Premium, even without the other HomeKit-related feature. Additionally, if you also have the Ecobee Smart Camera, the chime can be played through its built-in speaker and other Ecobee thermostats as well.
All in all, this option seems quite appealing, especially for those heavily invested in Ecobee's ecosystem, and the live feed feature alone could be enough to draw them in. The Ecobee Smart Video Doorbell is available for $159.99 from Amazon.com, along with other products from the company.
