Support for Philips Hue Matter was initially promised in March of this year. However, there was a delay in its release, which was quietly acknowledged just a few days before the deadline. Fortunately, whatever caused the delay has now been resolved, and Matter integration is now available in the Hue app.
So, what exactly is Matter? It can be described as a version of HomeKit that allows different smart home devices to be controlled by various voice assistants such as Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, Zigbee, and more. The most significant advantage of Matter is that it is supported by a wide range of companies, unlike the limited number of companies that support HomeKit. This means that almost everyone will be able to use Matter-compatible devices. For Apple users, this means they can now enjoy HomeKit functionality with a much broader selection of devices.
According to the Hue Blog, the rollout of Philips Hue Matter has begun, and the update is currently being distributed to existing bridges. I have personally updated my own bridge this morning, and it was a successful process. To use Philips Hue Matter, you will need a Matter-compatible home hub, which is likely already the case for most Apple users.
Some examples of Matter-compatible Apple hubs include the Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD (4th generation), HomePod (both generations), and HomePod mini. In addition, other compatible hubs include the Samsung SmartThings Hub, nearly all Amazon Echo speakers, Google Home or Home Mini, Nest Hub, Nest mini, and Nest Audio.
To update your Hue app with Philips Hue Matter support, simply follow these quick and easy steps:
1. Open the Hue app on your iPhone.
2. Tap on Settings at the bottom right.
3. Tap on Smart Home.
4. Tap on the + button at the top right.
5. Tap on Other Apps.
6. Tap on Matter.
7. If you had previously upgraded from the original bridge to the second generation version, the app may reject your account login. However, the update will still proceed without it.
