Exploring the TP-Link Tapo 2K: A High-Quality Addition to the HomeKit Camera Lineup

Cupertino, February 16, 2024

It's been a while since I've found a great new HomeKit camera for indoor use, but the TP-Link Tapo 2K is proving to be an excellent option. With support for local recording via SD card, HomeKit Secure Video, and TP-Link's cloud service, there are plenty of options for choosing this camera for indoor recording needs. One thing I want to emphasize above all: it supports Wi-Fi 6! HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework. One of the privacy features I appreciate about the TP-Link Tapo 2K is its physical privacy system. To further enhance privacy, the camera body hides the lens when privacy mode is activated. You can effortlessly enable or disable privacy mode with just a tap in the Tapo app or the button on the actual camera; you retain full control over the privacy of your home. While I trust HomeKit Secure Video to be accessible only to me, I love that you can walk past this camera, tap a button, and see that it can't physically see what's going on in the room. The best part is that HomeKit recognizes when this mode is enabled and turns off the camera within HomeKit. This security camera offers a 360° horizontal view and live 2K QHD images, so that every corner of your room is captured crystal clear in the Home app or in the TP-Link. Thanks to its large aperture of F1.6, it absorbs more light, resulting in images that are brighter and sharper at the same time. If you want to use the TP-Link app with a camera, you have access to some additional advanced AI technology that accurately identifies people, pets and vehicles while also recognizing unnatural sounds, such as a crying baby. You will immediately receive push notifications when unusual activities occur, so you can stay informed about what is happening at home or in another room. However, these features are not built into HomeKit.

Unpacking and setting up with HomeKit If you only want to use the TP-Link Tapo 2K with HomeKit, you can avoid using the TP-Link app. It includes a HomeKit code on the camera that you can integrate into HomeKit and then enable your recording and streaming settings. These settings are one of the best parts of HomeKit Secure Video, because it's incredibly simple and clear to understand what's happening. Once it's in the Home app, it can also be used for free with HomeKit automations, allowing you to turn on the lights, play music, etc., based on the motion the camera sees. If you have iCloud+, you have access to unlimited motion-based recording and unlimited HomeKit cameras.

Rounding out TP-Link Tapo 2K Overall, it's a really solid option for indoor cameras with HomeKit. I love some of the advanced features that the TP-Link offers with pan and tilt and when combined with HomeKit Secure Video and the physical privacy button. It has a wide viewing angle, so it can capture an entire room. I'd like to see Apple develop some of HomeKit's video features, but otherwise this is a great option for under $70. You can buy the TP-Link Tapo 2K from Amazon or Best Buy. FTC: We use monetized auto-affiliate links. More.
