Apple WWDC 2021 Keynote ads have appeared and disappeared, and the latest version of our favorite big screen operating system is now available for beta developers. Although they didn't receive much Keynote love, these features for Apple TV change the way we control our TVs, share experiences with others, and allow us to keep track of events in and out of our homes. Here are three tvOS 15 features you've probably missed from this year's dub.

SharePlay commands

Apple has spent a lot of time highlighting new social features on all of its devices during Keynote, most of the time focusing on SharePlay. If you missed it, SharePlay lets you share your music or binge-watching experiences with others by syncing playback via FaceTime.

However, what Apple didn't talk about was how you set up SharePlay on your Apple TV because it doesn't have a FaceTime app. Typically Apple, however, using SharePlay is relatively simple and almost automatic thanks to the magic behind the scenes.

During a FaceTime call, you can begin the SharePlay experience by clicking a new button below the Now Playing widget in the Control Center. Your Apple TV will automatically detect an active FaceTime call, and you can sign in right away so you don't have to worry about entering long email addresses with the Siri remote.

HomeKit enhancements

While the biggest tvOS news related to HomeKit has focused on a sleek new view of the multi-camera network and nearby accessory controls, tvOS 15 introduces a new way to interact with security accessories. After digging into tvOS 15 beta, I discovered additional HomeKit activity notification settings that include updates from not only HomeKit cameras, but also other security accessories, such as door locks and garage doors.

Now, when one of your doors unlocks, when the garage door opens, or when a camera detects movement, tvOS 15 will display a notification in the upper right corner of the TV screen. When camera activity occurs, the live stream of your HomeKit camera will appear in a handy picture-in-picture overlay that is above everything on the screen at this time. If you want to see more details, you can jump directly into a full-screen live view with just a click of the Siri remote.

Although you might think that these notifications would distract you, having them on TV means you won't have to walk away from the action on the screen just to find out that your neighbor's child has decided to take a walk in your yard. Of course, you can also customize your notification preferences and use the HomeKit Secure Video options that can filter out annoying notifications from pets and vehicles.

Renovated remote control

Technically, this is more of an iOS feature, but Apple has introduced a revamped Apple TV remote app for Control Center in the latest versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. However, because I'm relying on the remote control Control Center more than make Siri Remote real, the changes are definitely worth mentioning.

The new remote app now includes additional buttons for more standard TV functions. These include controls for changing your TV channel, accessing settings, turning off the volume, and switching on the power. The remote also changes the button labels and layout for the Apple TV, with a large back button now visible in the center of the screen below the touchpad. The Back button replaces the Menu button found on older Apple TV remotes, keeping everything in line with the latest Apple TV 4K hardware.
