Advice for multiple homes on one property.

Cupertino, July 27, 2023

I have a house and a workshop whose closest points are about 30 feet apart from each other. I am adding HomeKit accessories in the barn right now and I am deciding weather or not I should add the 5 rooms to the house that currently exists or if I should set up a separate home on HomeKit.

Ideally, with five rooms, I would be able to set it up in a separate home, but given that the workshop and house are so close, will my phone be able to automatically switch between the two?

I thought the automatic switching was based on location, but if it is affected by the wifi network it’s connected to, then I could set up a separate wifi network if need be. I’m going to be running a 10gb fiber line to the workshop and extend my hard-lined ubiquiti network out there with a 24 port switch at which point I will install cameras, access points and other computer hookups.

Admittedly most my interaction with HomeKit is done via HomePods but I am just trying to be as informed as I can be for making the decision of adding the rooms to the existing house or starting a new house. Thanks for your help!

Once I get all this set up I’ll have to do a walk through for you all. This workshop is a techy and Makers dream.
