Apple pulled end-to-end iCloud backup encryption plans after FBI objected

Cupertino, January 21, 2020

Apple once had plans to provide end-to-end iCloud backup encryption, according to a former Apple employee speaking Reuters who claims the plans were fired because of objections from the FBI.

In a new report, Reuters Apple says it has waived plans to offer end-to-end iCloud backup encryption because it feared the company would be subject to scrutiny by public officials and would encourage new anti-encryption laws.

"They've decided they won't shoot the bear anymore," the person said, after Apple blocked its head with the FBI in 2016 about access to an iPhone used for mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
