Apple pushes up iOS 13.1 and iPadOS to September 24th

Cupertino, September 19, 2019

iOS 13.0 has just arrived, but Apple is already pushing back the release date of its first big update: iOS 13.1 and iPadOS will now be available on September 24th instead of the release date originally announced on September 30th. The company has confirmed these revised dates The edge.

iOS 13.1 will bring several features that have not been retained for the initial release of iOS 13, including the automated actions of Siri Shortcut, an ETA sharing feature in Apple Maps, and the separation of data for enterprise devices. More importantly, Apple has promised that version 13.1 would bring general fixes to iOS 13, whose current software could certainly benefit. (Our review of the current version of the 13.0 software indicates a litany of problems we encountered while testing the new update.) IOS 13.1 will also fix the lockscreen workaround exploit in iOS 13, a flaw of quite important security in the current hardware.

Other features announced for iOS 13 - such as AirPod sharing and new features in HomeKit - will not ship with iOS 13.1 either, but are promised for a little later this fall.

iPadOS is the software update this year for Apple's iPad tablets, unlike iOS, which will remain the software for iPhone and iPod touch devices. This is the first time that Apple has tinkered with its mobile operating systems. In the future, iPadOS will be developed as a separate branch of a software sharing a common base, similar to the existing watchOS and tvOS platforms.

Update of September 19 at 14:40: Added extra details about the lockscreen exploit that is fixed in iOS 13.1.
