Aqara U100: do I need an M2 hub as well?

Cupertino, July 28, 2023

I'm thinking a newbie Homekit tinkerer thinking about replacing our August wi-fi lock as it's slow to unlock via HomeKit, and I'd like to add a keypad (so if I forget to bring my phone I can still use a passcode or physical key).

I'm always nervous about buying new things that rely on bluetooth, so a couple questions:

1. Is it generally reliable?
2. Will I need to purchase an M2 hub? The only Homekit Hub I have on the first floor is a homepod mini which kind-of has a line of sight at the lock at around 13-15 ft away.
3. What's the funkiness about setting up the lock through matter vs homekit? (Verge article mentions: "You can also connect it to Apple Home through Matter, but as the U100 is HomeKit compatible and works with Home Key, you would lose functionality through Matter. (Matter doesn’t support touch-to-unlock).") Generally isn't having matter a good thing? TL;DR will I have any issues setting it up? (worth noting I also have no other Matter devices on the first floor other than the Homepod Mini).
