Arlo Pro 3 Review: Robust features and sharp video

Cupertino, February 7, 2020

Arlo introduced its Pro 3 camera system for the first time in September, at an affordable price and promising eventual HomeKit support. While the Apple ecosystem has not yet been integrated, there is still a lot of love for the latest news from Arlo. A truly wireless design, various DVR options and lightweight installations make it one of the best options on the market in 2020.

However, slow response times and strange settings offer some difficult steps to secure during your home. Our review of the Arlo Pro 3 is based on all the best features and notes some areas of improvement that we hope to see this year.

Arlo Pro 3 offers specifications at a reasonable price

Arlo offers many of the features we would expect from a trusted security camera in 2020, including top 2K resolution and HDR support. Arlo specifically launched its Ultra 4K line a few years ago, but despite a number of attractive features, the price has stopped many consumers. The new Pro 3 calms many of these claims with a more enjoyable MSRP, while retaining a few key features.

  • HD video quality - enlarge objects and see clearer details and colors in 2K with HDR
  • The weatherproof, wireless design works with Alexa and Google Assistant and includes three months of Arlo smart services with 30-day cloud registrations
  • 160 ° field of view for a full view
  • Color Time View: See what color night vision is all about, or the traditional black and white
  • Integrated spotlight: illuminate at night and protect unwanted guests

At the time of our review, HomeKit support is not available on Arlo Pro 3, although it is promised in the future. Arlo has launched this feature on various models in the last 6 months, and Pro 3 is still on the pipeline for HomeKit support. Alexa and Google Assistant are already compatible right now.

Arlo is currently offering its Pro 3 camera system in three different options at the time of our review. Buyers can choose the 2-room system for $ 500 or 3-room at $ 650 from. A single room is available for $ 200 from. We often see these prices fall by 20% or less at retailers like Amazon.

Easily install

For my testing, I opted for the 2-room package, which comes with different media, a battery for each unit and the base station. Each battery is charged after it has been inserted into the camera via the included magnetic power cord. It takes about 3 hours to power each room when it is completely exhausted.

The package with 2 rooms includes a magnetic support and another with an adjustable arm. Both have their merits and are installed with screws incorporated. In general, the process is simple, without too many problems. I prefer the mount with an adjustable arm to get the right angle. In my testing, I found the magnetic support to be solid (good), but almost too strong when making fine (bad) adjustments.

Setting up the base station is simple, but depending on the materials at home, creative placement may be required. My network configuration is in the basement and I have a metal roof. This is a tough combination for any wireless product that lives outside. My cameras often had an inconsistent signal or were not available in this configuration. Fortunately, I managed to solve it by purchasing a low cost extension kit and placing the base station in my attic. It is not a claim in itself, as any product will struggle to pass through a metal roof. This small investment is locked in safe performance and reliability.

You'll also get an Ethernet cable for connection and a few video monitoring stickers to place around your property.

Pains of the subscription plan and a robust application

Arlo is getting a lot of love for providing free cloud storage on many of its rooms. Unfortunately, the Pro 3 system is not one of them. Going with one of Arlo's most premium offers, with 2K video and HDR support, means a more expensive subscription plan is required. A free 3-month trial is included in the box, but after that, you will need to opt for one of Arlo's two plans if you want to enjoy extended functionality and registration.

  The Arlo Pro 3 application

At the time of our review, the Premiere Plan amounts to $ 3 per room per month or $ 10 for up to 5 rooms. You are limited to 2K video on this plane, which is in any case Pro 3, but it is the most sensitive plan. The others save 4 km, but do not apply in this scenario.

Using a Premiere Plan offers a number of notable features, including cloud storage for up to 30 days and various activity detection options. The ability to stop certain categories, such as animals, is particularly useful ... although sometimes the app gets confused by my baby walking outside. In addition, you can configure package notifications and the possibility of using Arlo's Ar99 service in an emergency.

I found that the application is full of useful features during my testing, including the ability to manage almost every feature without having to jump to a desktop web browser. There is the option to view recordings in the cloud and configure monitoring areas - access to live views of all cameras and more. They beat every aspect there.

Clear video feeds, slow reaction time

First of all, probably most important, Arlo tilts the video with sharp streams that are easy to see. When set to 2K, the 160-degree viewing angle is wide and clear. By lowering the resolution, it allows Arlo to increase motion detection, following people, cars and animals as they move through the field of vision.

When plugged into an outlet, the response time is fast when you get a live stream. Unfortunately, this cannot be said when running on battery power. Arlo will record the original movement, but you want to quickly extract the feed to see what happens live, be prepared to wait up to 15 seconds, which may cause you to lose. This is a complaint limited only to Arlo, as many other rooms are fighting the same way. It would be nice to see Arlo delivering in this way with zippier performance.

Conclusion: The features make the Arlo Pro 3 an easy purchase

Going beyond the low price of security cameras on the market, it rewards the consumer with a higher quality of construction and more functions. This is especially true of the Arlo Pro 3, which stands out as a high-security camera for mid-range consumers, with stellar video quality and affordable configuration.

The subscription plan will be a disabling effect for some, but this is honestly expected in 2020. Going with a premier plan unlocks a number of notable features that are long in my eyes.

In general, Arlo Pro 3 delivers everything you could possibly want in a security system for under $ 500. And the option to coexist with Arlo's other offerings makes it all the more attractive.
