Bedside table - Smart Light with dimmer

Cupertino, January 7, 2024

Hi all! I'm trying to find a solution for something I thought was simpler. **Context**: (tiny) house fully compatible with Homekit. Aqara sensors, wall switches and buttons. A bunch of Meross smart plugs, matter and wifi (heater, kitchen lights, etc). Ever since I got into smart home territory, I've had one rule about any changes I've made: **It's only smart if it adds functionality and doesn't remove any**. In other words, I want any normal human being that comes in to have a "zero learning curve" by being able to physically control everything. It's worked so far, and the result is that mom approves, which is usually a good sign. Other than yelling at my HomePod to switch my music to hers, which is now a thing. A strong one. Anyway. **Problem:** On my side of the bed, I have a Xiaomi 2 bedside lamp. It works, does the job, and costs $25 where I live. It looks like a giant blobfish, but it works. However, on the other side of the bed, I was thinking of installing a more "normal" looking bedside lamp, with three requirements: \-**Bright** \-**Dimmable** \-**Physical and " Homekit- ally" controlled**, in all its functions (a button would be placed nearby for this if needed). **What I found:** **Option A**: Getting a stupid good bulb, putting it on a switchless cord connected to a smart plug, and pairing it with a $15 aqara sticky button next to it. I would set that button to turn the jack on/off and voila. Limitations of A: No brightness Pros of A: Inexpensive, local control (on/off) and HomeKit controllable (on/off) -- **Option B**: get a smart dimmable HUE bulb, put it on a cable no switch plugged into a regular outlet and pairing it with a $20 hue dimmer remote (placed on the side). Since I have Aqara stuff, this would force me to get a Hue Bridge ($60) to get everything working and voila. Limitations of B: Radically more expensive, another power-sucking hub, and spreading another layer of zig bee signals into my already cluttered smart air, plus an extra ecosystem in the mix (for a single bulb) Pros of B: Meet all requirements \-- **Option C**: getting a Nanoleaf A19 Matter bulb, putting it on a switchless cord connected to a normal outlet, and pairing it with a $15 aqara sticky button next to it. I would set that button to turn the jack on/off and voila. C Limitations: Dimming would be limited to app controls, so would have to ask me for that (not an iPhone user). Unless I could do double tap combos to scroll through the preset levels (I've thought about it now. Pros of C: Cheap, local control (on/off, maybe adjustable with double tap) and Homekit controllable Seeing all this and knowing that there are people here whose minds have led them to unfathomable wonders like automating toilet seat sensors that trigger bathroom vents in sync with "crowd cheering" sound effects, m- thought I might be enlightened with a few better options than my humble set of an A, a B, and a C. **Which hubless Homekit bulbs would you recommend?** **Is there a good Homekit remote switch besides the HUE one?** **Am I making the wrong assumptions about A, B or C?** Thanks and happy birthday!!
