Can I use Alexa to control HomeKit devices?

Cupertino, October 8, 2021

Best answer: Most likely, but it depends on the device. Many smart home devices today support Alexa, HomeKit, and Google Home right out of the box, so you can use them with your wizard of your choice - even if you first pair it with HomeKit. HomeKit-only devices also work with Alexa through software solutions such as Homebridge.

Alexa with HomeKit: ready to go

Luckily, HomeKit door locks, smart plugs and light bulbs also work with Alexa, thanks to the abundance of Echo devices available on the market. Enabling Alexa support on these devices is as simple as connecting your Amazon account through the vendors app or using the device discovery feature on Echo.

Even though these devices support multiple platforms at once, Alexa and HomeKit do not work together behind the scenes. This limitation means that you won't be able to incorporate your Echo devices into HomeKit automation or scenes, but unique controls, such as turning on lights through Alexa, work very well, syncing status with HomeKit as you'd expect.

The only caveat is that some HomeKit accessories - especially those that use Bluetooth for connectivity - require a bridge or hub to communicate with cloud services like Alexa.

Alexa with HomeKit: Homebridge the difference

For accessories that are HomeKit only, you can add Alexa voice control through software such as Homebridge. Homebridge is a lightweight server running on an ever-open Mac or Raspberry Pi that opens your HomeKit home to incompatible accessories and services like Alexa.

Homebridge is completely free to install on your hardware or, if you want to follow the easy path, you can buy a plug-and-play system, such as the HOOBS starter kit. Once started and running, you'll have access to hundreds of plugins available - including several that focus specifically on allowing Alexa to control your HomeKit devices that install with a few clicks.

We cover additional details for Homebridge and other software alternatives such as Home Assistant in our guide - How to connect incompatible accessories to HomeKit. Check it if you are interested in running your own server.
