I'm a little confused about what I'm missing. The whole reason I went with HomeKit-enabled locks was that it was easy to distribute to children, parents, even visitors.
I worked around it with my Son, giving him an account in the August app and setting it up. She needs him when she gets home from school on the bus.
The lock icon in Home / HomeKit is gray, saying something like they need the installed app to work. In my son's case, that didn't fix the gray icon, but at least he can unlock the door.
It's weird, because my wife is on the list too, but it works well. My parents can't unlock the door either. Now, I have recently set them to control things only inside the house. I assume that this means that it must be in our wifi network and not be able to use HomeKit via the HK Internet / Hub. It's good because they live a few hundred miles away.
It's weird that activating in HomeKit isn't enough for some users.
