Dimmable LED Outdoor Light String - Smart Outlet Hack

Cupertino, October 4, 2021

Hi All,

Wanted to share a trick I found when trying to hook up some dimmable LED string lights, and a HomeKit Dimmer.

I bought the Legrand Smart True Universal Plug-in Dimmer, and some dimmable string lights on Amazon. I paired the switch with HomeKit and plugged in the first light strip; they lit up great, and dimmed down to a faint level. Perfect... However, they wouldn't turn off completely!

I found that LED Dimming is pretty complicated, so getting dimmers and bulbs to work right is commonly not perfect. I read some stuff about a "dummy load", and replaced one of the bulbs in the string with an old school incandescent Christmas bulb. That fixed the not turning off problem, and the incandescent bulb even dims with the rest.

I know the dimmer isn't an outdoor, but it is the only HomeKit plug in dimmer I could find, so I'll put it in a waterproof box. Anyway, hope it helps someone out there.
