Do HomeKit automations have any kind of free time?

Cupertino, November 17, 2020

I just got a HomePod mini and was trying to mount a wireless light bulb on my nightstand to gradually light up in the morning, stay on for a while, then turn off.

Getting gradual lighting was a real pain (seriously, Apple, is there any way to set the brightness based on a variable ?!), but simple enough once I ran out of ideas for nicer ways to do it - I only have about one a dozen brightnesses separated by 60-second "standby" steps.

My problem seems to be that it never stops at the end. I have a much longer waiting step, after the brightness has been set to maximum, followed by a step to turn off the light. My question is: does this step not happen because the automations expire or something? I think the total time for automation is about 30-35 minutes. I admit that I didn't do many tests (I just received the minis!), But if it fails even once, this is not acceptable and indicates that there is something up.
