Hey Apple - What About HomeKit?

Cupertino, September 11, 2019

The new iPhones would always make headlines. And yes - one new Apple watch It's always great news too. But what about poor old HomeKit? Where was the love for Apple's smart home platform at the big September launch event?

We had only low hopes of so much prevalent HomePod 2 cheaper. But we were expecting at least something new on the HomeKit front. Something. No matter what.

Yes, Apple TV + products are excellent and will undoubtedly be a success for the tech giant Cupertino. But the users of Alexa, Amazon and Google, assistants, assail all assaults to be everywhere and everywhere; it is to be feared that the efforts of Apple's smart home are left to dust.

The latest major update on the HomeKit front came back in June during WWDC 2019, when Apple revealed that smart security cameras and routers would eventually be added to the smart home platform. There were also big improvements for the advertised HomePod, such as the ability for this one to recognize individual voices so that the smart speaker knows who he is talking to; and a new feature to transfer music from your iPhone or iPad to the HomePod itself.

Since then, zilch. Nada. Of course, there was a lot of new devices compatible with HomeKit the stores - largely thanks to Apple which has relaxed its stringent encryption standards, based on hardware. But when it is to improve the experience, improve the Home application or launch new hardware, everything is quiet on the front Apple Smart Home.

Apple's big rivals in the field of smart home (and in all areas, it seems now) - Google and Amazon - both have a smart home ecosystem built around high-performance smart speakers, available in models much cheaper than the HomePod at $ 299.

But if Apple has the huge advantage of having the Home app, and therefore HomeKit, in the hands of millions of people via iPhones and iPads (and even with Mac OS and Apple TV), it's still about a platform far behind its competitors.

It's a shame for smart home fans - including me - who are just waiting for Apple to bring HomeKit to life. Let's hope that next time Tim Cook and co. At Steve Jobs Theater, they will have big news of the smart home for us.
