I’m stuck between Google and HomeKit when I try to streamline my smart home. My wife and I are all Apple products with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and MacBooks, however we are rooted in Spotify and this became more annoying after we received a HomePod mini last week. I already have a Sonos speaker with airplay / Google functionality and a few more Google-enabled speakers that I could remove. Using airplay to send Spotify audio to your HomePod / Sonos is easy, but with Google-enabled speakers, you can ask it directly, which is a little easier because you don’t need a device in your hand. Then today I was just trying to set up a HomeKit automation to play the current Up First news podcast every day when I wake up. Unfortunately, you still need a paid Apple Music subscription to play a free podcast through HomeKit automation. I will say that after adding HomePod and taking the reigns as the hub on my iPad, it really improved everything else and I prefer to control my lights and other smart devices compared to HomeKit vs Google. So, for now, I’m thinking of keeping Google-powered speakers in place for our audio needs and having the HomePod as a HomeKit hub that allows Apple to open up the Spotify integration (without holding my breath). Is there a better way?
HomeKit for anything but music / podcasts? (Spotify)
