Homekit: I leave my fireplace when I go out!

Cupertino, March 13, 2020

Hi Reddit, I fell asleep last night and accidentally left the gas on fire. I decided I want to use my home to solve two things. (1) going to bed and accidentally leaving the fire and (2) both leaving the house with a gas fireplace.

Here's what I did, but I want to know if anyone has a better way.

First I installed an Aqara thermometer above the fireplace to work when it is hot (see the image below of the fireplace).

** Problem 1: ** Going to bed with the gas fire left by accident

Solution: I set up a 10.50 pm daily check to make sure the fireplace is not over 85F. I chose to drive automation through the Aqara hub, as it is in our bedroom, but I could have done this in omekit for a loudspeaker.

** Problem 2 **: Going home with a fire

Solution: The challenge for me here was to get a phone notification when I was out of the house. The only automation that calls me out of the house is my alarm going off.

So I set up a homekit automation for when the last person left home and added a shortcut (see below) that if the temperature is high, to trigger the alarm (the only way I can trigger an alarm is by setting the alarm and then unlocking the door to stop it).

Thoughts? ideas? I find it super inefficient.
