HomeKit just saved me a lot of work ...

Cupertino, October 6, 2021

This is just a success story that I wanted to share because I am so excited about it. Two of our rooms do not have an adequate HVAC flow, and my HVAC company has proposed some very expensive solutions to fix the problem. Hell, I thought I'd try to install [some duct booster fans](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZPF4NRX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1). For me, their installation in pipes is very easy, but I was not looking forward to wiring in a system to control them (install relays in the air handling device or buy / install air pressure switches for pipes ... plus run a lot of cables). I had air pressure switches in my Amazon basket when I thought about using HomeKit instead. I noticed that the Eve app includes a trigger through Ecobees of State = Active. So I wrote a simple automation to enable smart outlets when my air treatment device works. This easily beats using the traditional methods we mentioned above, plus it opens up the whole world of additional control options. As in, they run these fans only when they are needed or when the rooms are occupied. It even makes traditional ways of doing the same thing seem old-fashioned, clumsy and insecure.
