HomeKit using a surprising amount of cellular data?

Cupertino, February 12, 2021

I'm home most of the time because of quarantine, so I downgraded my cell plan to "after the concert." Surprised to receive a warning that I used more data than I expected. Culprit is "system services" which shows that HomeKit used 500 mb of cellular data in 9 days. I could have asked Siri to turn on my porch lights as I approached home once or twice at that time, but does that really require 500 mb of data? What else does HomeKit use cell data for, and is there a way to limit it?
