HomeKit Weekly: Homam Takes Crown for High Quality HomeKit Secure Camcorder Options

Cupertino, December 10, 2021

I've tested more HomeKit cameras over the years than I can possibly remember. However, recently I had the opportunity to start using the Homam camera with HomeKit Secure Video support and I can say without a doubt that it is the best option if you want premium hardware with robust software outside the Home application.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything that has to do with the smart home frame from Apple.

What makes it different?

The first thing you'll notice if you look at the Homam room list is the price. It's much more expensive than other individual HomeKit cameras - certainly not battery-powered ones.

So what makes it worth the price as a Homekit room? It is simply the best HomeKit camera on the market. I'd love to use it as an outdoor room, but unfortunately it's only for the interior. Homam is powered by USB-C and a USB power brick. It contains a variety of mounting options so you can mount it on the wall or place it on a bookshelf.

The Homam camera has a matte black aluminum exterior and a magic base that attaches magnetically to the camera body to hold it in place.

In general, the hardware makes it worth the premium price, and everything it does in Homam software is a plus.

HomeKit pairing

One of the disadvantages of HomeKit is the HomeKit code. Although it facilitates the initial pairing, there is a risk of losing the code if you do not write it down or store it digitally in an application such as HomePass.

Homam gets rid of the HomeKit QR code and uses an NFC connection to associate with the HomeKit. You'll need to pair it first with the Homam app, but then you'll see an option to connect it to the HomeKit. I started looking for the QR code on the device until I looked a little closer to the instructions, where it mentioned its association by the proximity of the device. All it took was a touch on my iPhone to pair it - what a fantastic process.

Once in HomeKit, you can create automations, view old recordings, set up recording options, select activity zones, and more, just like any other HomeKit camera.

Homam Vs. HomeKit

Homam includes built-in storage (64 GB) so you can use it independently without adding it to your HomeKit. You can also use HomeKit storage and Homam built-in storage at the same time. As all registrations take place on the device, there are no additional monthly charges. If you're in a situation where you don't want any cloud storage involved with your home cameras, Homam is very attractive.

Is it worth the price?

I admit, the Homam room is expensive. Using it, however, has the best indoor night video quality, the best sound microphone and the best overall construction of any HomeKit camera on the market. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people.

The Homam app is great and I think Apple could copy its user interface for the HomeKit video scrolling process. The app also contains several modes: view, nanny, security, and more. All these modes extend the usefulness of the camera. However, many of these modes can only be accessed using the Homam application compared to the Home application.

The bottom line is that as a premium HomeKit camera, Homam succeeds. Its premium construction makes it a fantastic choice for state-of-the-art HomeKit installations. Of course, to get the most out of your camera, you'll need to use the Homam app, but it can register in the HomeKit and trigger automation.

In the future, I would love to see Homam offer an outdoor option as well. We could see buyers appreciating even more the high quality of the construction as an outdoor room.
