I've created a simple homekit automation: Turn on Light X at 5am. Turn it off 30 minutes later.
Everything works and responds. Homepod is on, works and responsive, lifx light works and responsive, wifi works. Both before and after time, the work automation was supposed to work on when it was tested. Every apple product that I own (including the homepod, I asked it), knew what the right time was. Lightweight, home pod and wifi router are within 10 feet of each other. But at 5am, the light did not turn on. Unfortunately, I was not surprised.
Seeing apple dealing with "smart homes" is like watching a drunk elephant try to cross a minefield. You feel bad for them, you very much want them to succeed, but you know they are doomed.
