How much mDNS is too much?

Cupertino, January 18, 2024

Hi, I have a unifi setup with vlans (mDNS enabled) and everything is solid and working perfectly, that's not the problem. My doubt is about the amount of mDNS traffic I've seen with Wireshark (mDNS filtering). Each of my networks receives about 20,000 mDNS packets in a 30 minute time frame. It seems massive to me. If I turn off the mDNS reflector it drops to about 1000 for the same amount of time, so 20 times less - and of course the connections drop and the HomePods don't know about the devices anymore (so yeah, I think it's expected to be less) . I have around 50 HK devices so I was wondering if anyone has a chance to use wireshark on their network and filter by mdns just to check the number of packets they would send in the 15/30 time frame minutes, for comparison. Thanks.
