Why it is useful: Pressing a viewfinder button while pushing is hard, but everyone forgets to do it occasionally. Instead, set the smart controller to close the door automatically when you leave, and you'll never need to worry again - some models may even open the door when you get home.
How to do it: Our top garage door controller, Tailwind iQ3, is a model that can handle this automation without the need to use a third party service. To set it up, tap Add a vehicle in the app, and from then on the controller will recognize your car (based on your car's Bluetooth ID or an optional presence sensor) and open or close the door as you arrive or leave (you can decide).
If you have a HomeKit compatible controller, you can do the same, except that you need to respond to a request from your iPhone or Apple Watch before the door opens. IFTTT, a web service that connects smart devices, also has a geolocation feature (it detects your arrival and departure depending on the location of your smartphone); I found it to be a bit inappropriate, though, so we don't recommend it for a task like this that involves security.
