How to integrate an inexpensive water shutoff valve into HomeKit

Cupertino, April 3, 2024

After installing a Meross water leak detection system that works beautifully on HomeKit, I felt the need to find a way to automate the water shut-off valve and couldn't find a reasonably priced smart valve with HomeKit integration. So after some thought, I figured a HomeKit smart plug was all I needed to make any of those generic water shutoff valves shut off the water supply when a leak is detected. Basically, these cheap valves will pair with apps like Smart Home, but they can't be triggered by a HomeKit automation, but an interesting behavior is that these valves will automatically close when first turned on. So all I had to do was connect it to a HomeKit smart socket and set an automation to turn on the wave when a leak is detected. The shutoff valve is kept open and off all the time, but if a leak is detected, the smart plug turns it on and the result is what you see in the video. If I need to reopen the valve, I can do it through the Smart Home app or by pressing the button on the valve itself. Turning off the outlet will reset the system so the next time a leak is detected, the automation will turn on the valve and it will close.
