iDevices Dimmer switch - does not work with a fan

Cupertino, July 16, 2019

Note - I am NOT trying to use Dimmer to control a fan, but to control bulbs in a fan housing when there is separate fan / light controller on my wall.

I bought an iDevices Dimmer about 14m ago to use in my family room on a light / fan unit that already had a stupid dimmer and a stupid fan control along with each other. Work perfect for a few months, then failed. iDevices was behind the product, sent me a new one, and the old one went back. This new one worked perfectly until last night, as it did not turn off and could no longer be controlled via any app or the physical buttons themselves. I could make the night light work - but not the switch / dimmer.

Reebooting, resetting, removing and replacing - nothing I did in Home made a difference.

I switched back to a stupid dimmer switch - which after some fumbling around with wires, worked just fine as you would expect.

Here's the kicker, but I opened a ticket with iDevices who shared the following with me - which was news. I haven't seen this before and wanted to share for future search.

"Hello Paul,

Thanks for this information, in further investigation, the cause of the error is because it is associated with a fan. Dimmer will not fail immediately, but over time it will happen by connecting to a ceiling fan circuit. We have a solution for this to solve the problem for you and it would be to replace your Dimmer with one of our standard Wall Switches for this setup. Since Dimmer cannot withstand the load on the ceiling valve and our Wall Switch can.

Thanks,

They send me a regular switch, which is nice of them - but I hadn't heard that I couldn't connect a dimmer to a fan / light circuit before. Can be useful information to anyone!
