IKEA's smart blinds begin United States rollout

Cupertino, October 17, 2019

The confusing launch of IKEA's smart blinds in the United States continues today. The blinds were first to be released earlier this year, but they were delayed until October 1st. IKEA delayed them until "later this fall," but stocks are now available at IKEA retail stores located in the United States.

As HomeKit Hero For more details, IKEA buyers have turned to Reddit to report their findings. At the present time, it is the stores that display the availability of IKEA smart blinds in the United States:

  • Burbank, CA - Sizes 30 "and 32"
  • Covina, CA - Sizes 30 "and 32"
  • Fishers, Indiana - Sizes 30 "and 32"
  • Twin Cities, Minnesota - 30 "only
  • Draper, Utah - sizes 30 "and 32"

Despite this in-store availability, IKEA's FYTUR smart stores are still not available for purchase online. In addition, some of the sizes sold in retail stores do not even appear on the IKEA website. Some users have also been able to call IKEA and place an order over the phone.

IKEA's online inventory tracking system indicates that other stores will be available on October 20th, but it is unclear when the online launch and availability of outlets will be generalized.

Although they have been available in Europe for several months, IKEA's smart stores have experienced many delays in their launch in the United States. More recently, IKEA announced that smart blinds would arrive in the US "later this fall."

Unfortunately, IKEA Smart Shades will not support HomeKit at launch. While IKEA originally promised to take over the Apple platform, this request was canceled in August. The company said HomeKit support would be available later this fall, but it remains to be seen whether this will happen or not.

If you find yourself in one of the lucky cities where IKEA smart blinds are in stock, do you plan to buy them? Are you ready to make a leap of faith and assume that HomeKit's support will be added later? Let us know in the comments.
