iOS 13 is coming on September 19th, but it won’t have every feature right away

Cupertino, September 11, 2019

Apple will release its next iOS iteration - iOS 13 - on Sept. 19 for the iPhone 6S and later, the company announced today. iOS 13.1 will be available on September 30th.

The update brings a precious love to outdated iPhone applications, including Maps, Photos and Reminders, and gives users what they really want: the dark mode. The update of Apple Maps will probably be one of the most profound changes that my colleague Chaim Gartenberg attempted to achieve in June. The map interface is completely reorganized with more data and a row of icons for people's favorite places, like their home or workplace. It also offers real-time estimates of public transport and a Google Street View mode, which is years behind, but here. This may not help the company to overcome the dominance of Google Maps, but loyal users of Apple Maps will certainly notice these improvements.

Other smaller but useful features include a new Find My app that combines Find My iPhone and Find My Friends. It also includes a keyboard for faster typing. Memoji can be turned into stickers and the Health app now has a built-in period tracking to predict menstrual cycles and timing with the Apple Watch.

The iOS 13.1 update will include the updates originally planned for iOS 13, including that Siri can read incoming messages aloud; Siri shortcuts can be added to HomeKit automations; sharing an ETA with friends; and the ability to import photos directly into an app when a camera is connected to an iOS device. Other updates, such as audio sharing between two sets of AirPod and compatible speakers HomePod and AirPlay 2 that can access songs, playlists and radio stations with Apple Music, are pushed to "later this fall".
