Lend me your expertise. Is Homekit the solution for me? Also Aqara B1 questions.

Cupertino, October 5, 2021

Hello folks, this is my first time visiting this sub. I hope this is the right sub to ask this. I am a newbie when it comes to home automation and I have a few questions.

So I wanted to install a smart curtain/drape track and from my research, it seems Aqara track is quiet and cost-effective. And Aqara B1 seems to be the one that works with Homekit. My question is: if I purchase the track, would that typically include the motor or is it just a shell track that i have to purchase the motor separately and connect? What is Zigbee and what does it mean that a gateway is needed?

I currently have a few (4) Google home mini (I use it to play music throughout my apartment and light in my bedroom). The builder of my new house will apparently give us a few smart device including Echo Dot, Show-5, Samsung Smart Things Hub, Ring doorbell, WiFi garage opener, Leviton Decora Smart Switch and WAP / Eero. I know nothing about some of those things (Show-5, Samsung Hub, WAP/Eero) and how it can be utilized for home automation. What do those do and are these things compatible with Homekit?

My goal is to start on home automation for my new house. I will be getting smart bulbs, led strips, and other smart things. Maybe will an apple tv too. My wife and I uses iPhone 12 Pro and 8 so if I can utilize Homekit, I think it will be very convenient.

Please lend me your expertise on home automation and Homekit. Thank you in advance!
