LG C9 can't be added at home if I have the remote control associated with my cable cable?

I'm shocked / sad / sad / surprised / dismayed and a little upset that it really seems true.

When I try to add the recent Covid purchase of an LG C9 to my home by scanning the QR or manually entering the 8-digit code, the TV reports success, but the app says the device could not be added. I did a few searches and found dozens of possible solutions that didn't work. Then I discovered that removing my Comcast DVR (aka set-top box) from being paired with the magical LG "remote" solves everything.

What happens? Some kind of Bluetooth shenanigane?
