Lighting machines

Cupertino, November 2, 2019

My first entry into the smart home arena was probably like most connections and bulbs and then LED strips and eventually turned on the light switches.

Right now I have something simple "lights turn on at this time", "lights go off after x minutes", and an actual automation where when after a certain hour in the evening, if my sleep number detects that I'm in bed, it runs "good night" automation to lock the house and turn off all the lights.

I say all this to get to the point of having all that cool, but I still turn off lights when I go in and leave a room or I just leave them on until I walk in bed. It's still stupid.

For those with motion sensors, what are some decent and cheap motion sensors AND how do you place them in a room so they don't just turn on lights if someone walks down a hallway past the door or when the dog / cat / roomba / non-human device coming into the room? Since my light switches are usually immediately to the left or right of a doorway in a room, the sensor needs to pick up a person as soon as they enter the room, but not so late as they are already in the room to turn the light on manually. I'm guessing it's possible to get the switch to control the light as well.

Thanks!
