Mac Mini as a HomeBridge server?

Cupertino, January 30, 2024

I know I've seen a few mentions of them having an old Mac Mini as a HomeBridge server and I was looking for people to talk about their experience. Looks like my Intel NUC might be on its last leg (I had trouble installing Ubuntu and then barely reinstalled Windows 10 on it; that's a whole other story lol). Not sure if I need to replace the ram modules as I removed a stick and have windows stable for now. I tapped a late 2014 Mac Mini for a cheap price, meaning a 2.6GHz i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD; I plan to upgrade the HD with an NVM SSD with an adapter. Although I would like to upgrade the RAM to 16Gig, it seems that these models are stuck with what is soldered on them. The plan is to familiarize myself with the MAC OS; I have everything else in the Apple ecosystem except a MAC, and I put HomeBridge on it. The last time I messed around with a MAC was in middle school and I won't mention the eons of years ago which was the MAC II I think? I'm a PC guy from day one MS-DOS anyone? I like the idea of having HomeKit access on my desktop and adding the ability to control my Home that way as well. I've also seen a few say they have Home Assistant on one. If those who have one are running HomeBridge or Home Assistant, how is the stability and what method did you use to set it up. If I really like the Mac Mini, I'll probably look for an M1 or M2 Mac Mini once the M3 is out and try to get a deal. TIA!
