MacBook Air "M2", macOS utilities, Stream Deck, questions from the listener on the AppleInsider podcast

Cupertino, July 9, 2021

In this week's episode of the AppleInsider podcast, we cover the MacBook Air "M2" rumors, the Facebook report in the default iPhone and Android applications, our current MacOS utilities, and answer the listener's questions.

Developer @Dylandkt claims that the next generation of the "M2" chip will be released in the first half of 2022. If true, then it is said that a redesigned MacBook Air - probably in more colors - will probably be the first device that will have this next iteration of Apple Silicon. "M2" will be a chip separate from the "M1X" rumor that will power the latest Apple MacBook Pro and iMac Pro devices.

Meanwhile, Facebook commissioned a study to investigate the use of third-party apps by Apple and Android users, then removed parts of the report to The Verge. Being generous, you can say that the criteria for this study were unclear and less than solid. But it seems to list the top 20 most used apps on iOS and Android. Facebook says this demonstrates that the primary applications that occupy most of the top spots in this study exhibit anti-competitive behavior, but we discuss the holes in their argument.

Speaking of apps, though, we've added some of our favorite Mac utilities, including the macOS menu bar manager, Barman. All users with numerous application icons in the menu bar would benefit from the customization tools available in third-party utilities. In addition, we examine the Elgato Stream Deck product and why it is attracted to both live streamers and advanced users.

At the end of the show, we answer the listener's questions, including recommended headphones for video editing, creating shortcuts to access the settings panels on iOS and Apple's long-term privacy mission.
