Meross Smart Switch suddenly unresponsive, completely removed, now cannot be added. Why?

I received the 8-digit homekit number. I removed it from the Meross app and the Home app. I've made sure I'm on the 2.4Ghz network. I did a factory reset by long pressing the bottom rectangular button. I long pressed the switch button to pair. Pairing seemed to be successful, but when it tried to add itself to the Home app, it bombarded saying it couldn't connect to wifi. But, I tested the 2.4Ghz network by playing youtube and opening the Home app. It works. Is Meross or Homekit defective? What can I do now?
