Most Americans have still not made smart automation a part of their home - 2019 versus 2017 studies

The new study mentions 63%, compared to 45% in 2017, not owning a smart home solution at all. Among those who chose, the connected devices (11%), clear thermostats (8%) and intelligent security systems (7%) chose:

It may be that a majority of US homeowners still think of smart home technology as something just for the rich. It may also be that middle-class American homeowners do not realize how affordable smart home technology has become to them, or feel overwhelmed by all the options out there. Whatever the case, the 2019 study found that US homeowners statistically own 2.9 smart home devices per year. House on average compared to an average of 3.4 two years ago.
