Nanoleaf Essentials Holiday Lights - User experience update

Cupertino, April 6, 2024

I was able to find three sets of these for 1/3 their original price, so I decided to give it a go despite the mixed reviews. I installed them at the top of my walls in our great room and main hall as "mood" lighting and they were a lot of fun and quite nice to have: we have regular power outages and managed to connect a set to me. UPS for my router and phones so when the power goes out we're not in the dark.

I set them up in early January, the same day they released a firmware update for them. I only left them installed through their own app for about two and a half months. There were some bugs with their behavior, but I figured it was mostly to do with a lag after opening the app. When I started waiting about 15 seconds after opening the app to try to control them, I had no problems at all.

About 10 days ago, there was another update (there may have been another update in between, I just can't remember for sure). I decided at that point to add a set to HomeKit through Matter. Since then, they have worked flawlessly. A few scenes and automations are included, and on/off and % work well from HomeKit. Color and themes remain controllable only through their app, but that's not a problem.

I'll probably move the remaining two sets to HomeKit this weekend.

I know there is a lot of criticism of Nanoleaf customer service and some of their devices, but I knew this was happening. I weighed what I could get from these lights at a great price against the negatives and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did!

I would definitely get more of these for my Christmas tree if I could get them again for the same price.
