Need advice on wiring a Lutron Caseta Switch

Cupertino, October 4, 2021

I had my house COMPLETELY re-wired in 2009-10 when I bought it, as it was all knob and tube at the time. Recently, I've been converting my switches to Lutron Caseta switches and dimmers. The electrician did some odd things, but I believe it was all to code, and I've been able to get Caseta switches and dimmers to work everywhere I've tried them... until today. As the re-wire was in 2009 my understanding was that neutral wires were required, and everywhere I've looked previously, I've found them.

Today, I went to swap out the switch on my bedroom ceiling fan light with a Caseta dimmer, and the fan switch with a Caseta switch. I started with the light, since it was a dimmer, it was a pierce of cake, but then when I went to the dimmer, I realized I was short a wire. Then I realized all the conductors in the box were in a single cable. The white conductor is the hot leg. I am very confused. Do y'all think there is a way to make the Caseta switch work?
