New hardware, updates, and apps on this week's HomeKit Insider podcast

Cupertino, April 5, 2021

During the latest HomeKit Insider podcast, we go through the latest news, including a series of new hardware, updates, and application versions before addressing a series of listener questions.

The launch of the new hardware was the second-generation range of Decora switches and smart sockets from Leviton, which connects directly to Wi-Fi and does not require a hub. Naim is also launching a new premium Wood edition of its incredible Mu-so 2 AirPlay 2 speaker.

The outdoor smart plug The Wi-Fi cassette from Lutron is now available to order after it was announced at CES, while Eve has updated its Thread firmware on the Aqua smart watering system.

Aqara has released a firmware update for its MS1 hub, which adds Adaptive Lighting to its line of smart bulbs.

For UK users, the new VOOClinc camera - VC1 with HomeKit Secure Video - has apparently been launched. He will certainly come to the United States sooner rather than later.

Finally, Aaron Pearce is preparing to launch a new application called HomePaper. This app allows users to quickly and easily create custom wallpapers for the Home app with a customizable gradient and image.

When he registered, Aaron promoted an early Testflight version, but has since been shipped to the App Store for release. It hasn't been released yet, but it should be available soon.

Listener's questions

Starting with questions from our listeners, Angel Vargas wanted to know what the future of Apple's smart home was when Apple discontinued the original HomePod. Short answer, the future of HomeKit is getting brighter and brighter.

Steve asked us to compare the free Eve app as well as the paid Home 5+ app. He also wanted to know the advantages and disadvantages of the Netatmo ringtone compared to the Logitech Circle View ringtone.

One user wrote wondering what the options are for adding HomeKit to a set of plantation shutters.

John asked if there was an easy way to find a HomeKit consultant for homeowners who want to set up a HomeKit home.

As for the Abode security system, Cameron Donnelly wanted to know if you are only able to arm different areas or if it is an all or nothing situation.

Finally, we were asked if there is a smart lock that can work with both the Ring security system and the HomeKit.

Stay tuned for more!
