Philips Hue Bridge v1 support will be completed from April 2020

Cupertino, March 9, 2020

Philips Hue has confirmed that support for the original Philips Hue Bridge v1 will be discontinued from April 2020. Philips Hue official handles twitter confirmed this news via a tweet earlier this week.

Starting April 2020, software support, including bug fixes, will stop for all Philips Hue Bridge v1 devices. Hub compatibility with Philip's online services will also be withdrawn.

Philips Hue explained this decision by invoking hardware limitations on Philips Hue Bridge v1. According to Philips Hue, the older hub device does not have sufficient resources to support product development. This is appropriate from a compatibility, speed and security perspective.

If consumers still insist on using the older version of Philips Hue Bridge, they can do so using the local dedicated application. The real function of the Hue bridge allows the control over the intelligent lighting functions on the Internet.

After the Philips Hue Bridge v1 media is complete, the devices will be disconnected from the servers

After support is complete, older Hue Bridge devices will be disconnected from Philips servers. However, consumers can still control their smart lights while connected to the local network using the Philips Hue Bridge v1 Inheritance application.

Philips also confirmed that they will stop software updates for the legacy Philips Hue Bridge v1 after April 2020. This also means that there will be no security updates, which endangers the old device.

The Philips Hue Bridge is the control hub for the successful Philips Hue smart lighting line. This bridge allows advanced control functions for smart lights on the Internet. Consumers use the deck to control the brightness, colors and to turn the lights on or off.

The Philips Hue line has now equipped the latest Philips Hue line with Bluetooth connectivity. This helps bypass the need for Philips Hue Bridge, as consumers can use Bluetooth to control smart lights in a close range.

Philips released an updated version of Hue Bridge - Philips Hue Bridge v2 - in 2016. This is the latest version for which the service and services connected to the internet will continue as usual.

Philips Hue has released Philips Hue Bridge v2 with additional support for Apple HomeKit. This was designed to be a sufficient attraction for consumers to upgrade to the latest version.

The older version of Philips Hue Bridge could not support Apple HomeKit, because initially Apple HomeKit had certain restrictions. Apple HomeKit, at the time, asked hardware manufacturers to build in a physical hardware authentication chip. Apple has eased these restrictions into the latest Apple HomeKit requirements.

Philips Hue also addressed consumers using Hue Bridge v2. The company said that there is currently no plan to replace v2 in the near future. As such consumers can rest assured that Philips Hue Bridge v2 will continue to receive support and security updates.
