Podcast: Three IoT Acquisitions and Infrastructure Bill - Stacey on IoT

Cupertino, November 11, 2021

This week's show focuses on three big businesses taking place in the IoT sector and an IoT report from businesses. First, we're talking about ADT buying SunPro Solar for $ 825 million, which is another business that brings energy management to the smart home. Then we talk about the acquisition of Level Home, the state of smart home deals and the multifamily housing market before exploring an IoT report for businesses from Oracle that offers some good surprises. For the final acquisition of the show, we cover Viasat's $ 7.3 billion acquisition of Inmarsat and explain a bit of the satellite economy we wrote about recently. In the lower news, Kevin has found a neat HomeKit app and service, Wyze has a new light and outdoor room, and GE ovens are becoming capable familiar to users since June. We also share our choices from the gift guide and other holiday ideas. Finally, we hear from a low-sighted listener who is upset that Facebook is coming out of facial recognition.

Our guest this week is Karen Lightman, executive director of the Metro21 Smart Cities Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She is in the running to talk about approving the $ 1.2 billion infrastructure bill by Congress. We are talking about the impact that this will have on smart cities and specific policy recommendations to ensure that we get fair access to broadband on a large scale. Because you can't have a smart city or even the internet of things without the internet. She also shares a bit about the reaction the smart city movement is experiencing as citizens become concerned about their privacy and growing oversight, and talks about her hopes that companies will do more to build that trust. I myself think this will take government action, but we'll see. Enjoy the show.
