Questions Ecobee Thermostat HomeKit

Cupertino, April 13, 2021

I have 2 new Ecobee thermostats added to the HomeKit setup. I think I understand a lot of the operation between the Ecobee app and the Home app and I've read for hours on Reddit, etc., but I have a few persistent questions to solve this in my head. I understand the concept of Eco + (practically smart home and away) and during the day, when my wife and I are at work, I can see that both Ecobees show Eco +. I also understand and have confirmed that when I entered the room on the ground floor, where the first Ecobee is, Eco + for both thermostats disappears (the other is upstairs). Hence my first question: 1. I had not yet set up Thermostat Group on the Ecobee web portal, however Eco + disappeared on Ecobee upstairs when I entered the room with Ecobee downstairs. How did Ecobee upstairs know how to turn off Eco + if the thermostat group had not yet been set up? (I have 2 remote sensors, one for each thermostat, but I didn't even get into those rooms). But my main confusion is with HomeKit / Ecobee automation, Away mode and Eco +. My remaining questions: 2. If Eco + works properly, why does it matter if I set up automation to trigger Away mode when the last person leaves the house? Isn't Eco + the same idea by stopping the air until a minimum or maximum temperature is reached? 3. I try to set up an automation that tells Ecobees to disable Eco + when the first person gets home. This is because we do not always go to rooms with thermostats as soon as we get home. I'm aware that I can do this with an additional remote sensor, but that's not my question. My question is this: If I am already in Home Comfort mode with Eco + display, can I configure an automation in the Home application to remove Ecobees from Eco + because we are at home? Or ... do Ecobees (or remote sensors) have to detect movement to trigger the Eco + stop? 4. Finally, and this is related to the last question, I am aware of the Geofence setting in the Ecobee application. However, when I added my wife through the invitation process in the Ecobee app and when I installed the Ecobee app on her phone, she “joined” my Ecobee account ok; but has no geofence option. Instead, she writes on her phone under Geofence something like “you are a member [of my] HomeKit at home, so any additional settings need to take place [by me] in the HomeKit ”. I'm not sure why this is, but it looks like I'm able to get Ecobees out of Eco + through automation and it works the same for my wife and me, the automation should be done by the Home app. I realize that this is not ideal because the sensor occupies the home and I shoot 300 feet from home, as opposed to an adjustable radius in the Ecobee app, but she does not receive that option as being in my house as a guest in HomeKit. Phew, I hope I make sense here. I'm pretty good at these things, but I'm trying to conceptualize how to set up my system most efficiently. Thanks.
