Secure notifications with Assure Lock 2 Plus

Cupertino, April 1, 2024

Hello! I was looking to start the process of transferring the house to HomeKit items (had Next Cams & Doorbell & Lock). The first item I wanted to move was the lock and I bought an Assure Lock 2 Plus. For months - since installation - the behavior has been erratic. Generally, all commands to lock from a device seem to work - but any action taken on the lock itself will only occasionally return to the Hub/Homekit. The lock can be locked/unlocked manually 6 times per day and anywhere between 0-6 of these events can be logged or generated notifications. This is also supported by the passive state of the block which does not update whenever the notification is not generated. Example: HomeKit thinks the lock is locked and it is. I unlock it manually. No notification is generated and HomeKit shows that it is still locked. I ask to unlock it from HomeKit and the lock ends up being confusing and locking/unlocking to get back to sync. It seems clear that there is a fundamental communication problem between Lock->HomeKit. We have a large amount of hubs in the house (problem?) on an Eero Mesh network. There are two Apple TVs within 15 ft of the lock (one line of sight, one with two walls in between). There are countless other devices that should also be in bluetooth range. The lock acts up a lot at this point, and by chance or whatever algorithm Apple uses, the home hub chosen is the worst/furthest from the lock (and the most isolated in the whole house). I haven't done enough testing to confirm that the behavior is worse based on the Hub selected, but it wouldn't surprise me. The home network is an Eero mesh network, but without the secure router enabled. Any thoughts? About to throw in the trash.
