SimShine raises $8 million for home security cameras that use edge computing – TechCrunch

Cupertino, September 10, 2019

SimShine, a Shenzhen-based computer vision startup, has raised $ 8 million in pre-A funding for SimCam, its line of home security cameras, which uses state-of-the-art computing to keep the data on the device. The funding was led by Cheetah Mobile, with the participation of Skychee, Skyview Fund and Oak Pacific Investment.

Earlier this year, SimShine raised $ 310,095 through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. He will use his pre-series A round for product development and hiring.

The SimShine team began developing state-of-the-art computer vision software, spending five years working with business customers before launching SimCam.

Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer Joe Pham, co-founder and chief marketing officer, told TechCrunch that the company plans to market more smart home products using advanced computing with the ultimate goal of creating a platform. IoT to connect different devices. Currently, SimCam is integrating with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and support for Apple Homekit is in preparation.

According to Pham, Edge Computing protects users' privacy by keeping data, including facial recognition data, on the device, while reducing latency and false alarms, because calculations are done at all times on the device (cameras connect to Wi-Fi to allow customers to watch video surveillance of their smartphones). It also means that customers do not have to subscribe to the subscription plans required by many cloud-based home security cameras and reduce the price of each device, since SimCam does not have to manage cloud servers.
