Switching to HomeKit, you need some tips

Cupertino, April 19, 2020

Hi all,

TL: DR .... What switches do you use with HomeKit? Lutron? Eve? Or something else and use automation with another service?

So, I've been an avid Smart Homes fan for a long time. I started with Lowe's Iris, then switched to SmartThings when Samsung bought them. Samsung is running SmartThings on the ground and I want to get out.

Like a huge Apple Fanboy, obviously HomeKit is my next step (though I will miss being able to run custom code). I just bought an Abode system for security, but I want to be able to run everything else through HomeKit as long as possible, but it will probably end up adding in Home Assistant.

So I was a little dismayed to see that Eve and Lutron were the only smart switches that work. Currently, I have GE smart switches all over my house, and replacing them with Eve or Lutron makes my heart (and wallet).

I've never used it before, and at $ 50 + on the switch, for most switches in my house, I'm about to drop enough for a new iPad Pro.

Are these switches worth it? None is compatible with Abode, which annoys me, especially since I went with Abode especially for its HomeKit comparability. I'm moving to Lutron right now, but I still have a hub and another application in my house ... eww.

For your Lutron users, is it worth using with HomeKit? For Eve's users, how are they?

Thanks!

-Steve
